Where to buy wine glasses in New York?

Where is a good place to buy wine glasses, cocktail glasses, and other assorted glasses you drink out of in New York?

I've bought some overpriced crappy glasses from Crate & Barrel that have all broken very easily, so I'd like to avoid them.

I've also been to a lot of the restaurant supply stores on Bowery Street and they will only sell you 12 to 36 of one type of glass, no less.

So if you know of a good place where I can buy 6 of one type of glass, I'm all ears.

Seconding Fishs Eddy. I also have some assorted wine and drinking glasses from Pier 1 imports that are over 10 years old, and still holding up well (barring me actually dropping them). They have lots of cute styles, and are cheaper than C&B or Pottery Barn. Both places have locations near Union Square.

Best answer: I second Pier 1. Their cheapo wine glasses are regularly about $2 per glass and I bought mine when they were on sale for $1. They have survived two moves and lots of use without a chip or break.

I like Ikea glasses for liquor because they aren't oversized. You can get 5 ounce wine glasses and 5 ounce martini glasses, whereas almost every body else's hold 8 or 9 ounces. I think I paid $3 for 6 wine glasses and $7 for 6 martini glasses.

Ikea's homewares section is huge and a huge bargain. Lots of neutral colored and styled glasses, dishes, silverware, vases and the like.

There's a restaurant supply place in the Chelsea Market that will sell you the same stuff as regular restaurant supply but in smaller quantities. And higher prices, of course, but they're still pretty reasonable.

They closed, sadly. Or at least, drastically reduced their space. I was just there and some clothing store is in the old restaurant supply space.

Nthing fish's eddy and ikea. Also, check into TJ Maxx. They have housewares for dirt cheap, though it is hit or miss.

MoMA design store! There's one across the street from the museum, and I think also one in SoHo. Bit pricey, but really cool and unique stuff.

Ikea glasses are cheap for a reason -- the glass they use is very brittle and shatters easily. I don't buy Ikea glassware any more.

I get my drinking/wine glasses from Broadway Panhandler. For more obscure types of cocktail glasses (like Libbey coupes), go to Tea Gallery, which is on 131 Allen St., just off Rivington St., on the west side of the street. There is another tea shop that's at 145 Essex St. that has a similar inventory.
