I don't know anything about Skype, except my friends think it's great. But my husband and I each have a cell and no land line at home. It hasn't been a problem for us in our 4+ years of living here.

It depends where you're moving to. Where I live, dropping the landline in favor of cell phone or VOIP isn't an option. (We have little-to-no cell reception in the yard, less when we're in the house; and the cable goes out at least once a month, so using it for telephony isn't a viable option.)

we've had vonage for 5 years and love it. (we've had in in many states and even foreign countries without issue) or you could always wait a few weeks until google voice/grandcentral is rerelased. the whole point there is ease of accessibility and consolodation. then you could simply use whatever phones are at hand/switch to cheaper phones etc because the only number you would give out would be the google voice number.

You might be interested to know that you can get DSL without paying for a phone line in some places, though it usually takes a little work - The magic phrase is Dry loop pair. There's some tricks to getting it set up, but that link should get you started.
