Help repair a reel type slot machine

My best friend just bought an old style slot machine (you know, drop in a quarter, pull the handle, the reels spin, etc.) and needs help getting it fixed.

When the handle is pulled, the reels spin but they don't stop like you would expect, they just slow to a stop from friction.
The status display says that the machine is in a "Tilt" state. There is a key lock (the key is missing) near the top, above the pull handle. [The plan is to circumvent this and/or replace it.]

It is a "Top Line Slots" machine by International Gaming Technology, Reno, NV. (Model 1631A REEL SLOT made in Jan. 1985)

He is trying to fix the machine himself. There seems to be a bunch of information about the newer machines available, but it is difficult to find info about the older ones. There are businesses that will repair it but the cost plus shipping are prohibitive; we're looking for free or nearly free information.

Help me help him get this machine from a (very heavy) decorative piece to a functioning slot machine.

Does it say S2000 anywhere? Does it look like one of these: http://www.ohiogaming.com/slotmachines2000.htm ?

If it's not an S2000, you're probably going to have some issues finding parts for it. I'm assuming you don't live in Vegas or Reno?

I can see if I can dig up something up, but I don't know if I can find anything on pre-i960 platform machines.

Best answer: Here's a service manual for the S line: http://slotsdirect.com/igtmanual_dnld.html. If you can diagnose the exact problem, you can probably order parts somewhere.

My father and I rebuilt a 1920 nickle slot machine when I was a teenager. You will definitely need the key, but this and any other parts should be readily available for a price. We were very surprised at how many slot hobbyists were out there, as well as remanufactured parts. I would find a hobbyist association and ask them directly for information. I believe that's what my father did.
