What is a good gift for a departing friend who enjoys barbecuing...
I dont have a price range in mind unfortunately... but probably at least $100

Good book on the subject: Cooks Illustrated's Steaks, Chops, Roasts & Ribs....maybe to go along with the rub mentioned above?

Does he have a particular grill? There are any number of accessories that he might want. For example, I have a rotisserie for my Weber that I use a lot. A lot of cooks swear by the Thermapen thermometer so that is another option, although it is less than $100 (but $74 is still a pricey thermometer and you could always add a carrying case or something).

A membership in a steak mail-delivery club, like this exotic meat delivery club, for instance, through which he/she'll get to enjoy alligator meat, python fillets, and ostrich burgers, among others.

Get a custom mini branding iron made. When he's grilling, he can brand the food. The website is terrible. However, the branding irons are unusual and pretty cool. I got one for my husband and one for my uncle and both loved them. They run about $75 or so.

Does it have to be only one thing? One of the best grilling gifts anyone has given me was a small halogen light that clamps onto my grill with a very strong magnet. As someone who will grill with snow on the ground and an hour after the sun has set, it's been a grodsend.
Maybe a variety of tools like that would be good.

I've bought two of these as gifts, and both were very well received. It's a remote thermometer - you stick the probe in your meet, and keep the remote with you, and it beeps you when the temp is reached.

Sentimental with some time to prepare: Photo album book with favorite recipies from all of your friends combined with pictures - of the food and fun times with them. (anything from a beer can chicken to the subsequent fire department visit)
Less sentiment more flavor: a smoker

Second the rub...buy a ton of spices, all he/she would need to make one or many rubs. spices are spendy and run out at the wrong times, so a fully stocked spice rack will rock.

I bought some cedar grilling planks as part of a gift for friends who like to barbecue salmon. I see that they now have cedar wraps available too.
