Text-Message-Sized Love Notes
April 18, 2009 11:33 AM   Subscribe

My SO and I have completely opposite work schedules, so often the only way we can communicate for days at a time is through notes and text messages. I'm looking for cute and unique little poems and phrases to send him throughout the day to send him. My favorite examples are inside:

Por ejemplo, this Shel Silverstein poem:

I know you little, I love you lots,

my love for you could fill ten pots,

fifteen buckets, sixteen cans,

three teacups, and four dishpans.

I also enjoy sending him cute one-liner jokes and pick-up lines, anything beyond the usual "I love you! You're cute! I'm thinking of you!"

Thank you, Hive Mind!

Not cute so much, but lovely, from Emily Dickinson:

Wild Nights – Wild Nights!
Were I with thee
Wild Nights should be
Our luxury!

Futile – the winds –
To a heart in port –
Done with the compass –
Done with the chart!

Rowing in Eden –
Ah, the sea!
Might I moor – Tonight –
In thee!

I once spent a year writing a text-message-sized love poem every day. I relied on an online rhyming dictionary and thesaurus.

Of course, I was doing it as part of a joke, so I wasn't worried if the poems sucked; it would be difficult to compose a good love poem every day for a year.

Here's your winner, from Jane Kenyon.

The Shirt

The shirt touches his neck
and smooths over his back.
It slides down his sides.
It even goes down below his belt—
down into his pants.
Lucky shirt.

Best answer: My husband used to send me cute text messages that were metaphors for how much he loved me. For example, I love you hard, like Sunday crossword puzzle hard. And I love you like the wind loves the tree-tops! There were a lot of personal reference ones, too (like comparing his love to how much our dog loves something. I always thought they were creative and romantic!

Till we watch the last low star,
Let us love and let us take
Of each other all we are.

On some morning with that star
One of us shall lie awake,
Lonely for the other's sake.

Best answer: We do this. The husband sent a recent one that was sort of like this:

k,

Love love love love. Love love love love "love" love love love. Love love love! Love love (love love) love love love? Love love love love love.

love, w.

We send each other emails in familiar email form too - like a business email:

Attn. w:
I want to thank you for expressing your sincere love for me. I benefit from this greatly. It is imperative that the staff at k receive love from w with frequency.
and this goes on - ending with 'regards, k.

We've also done a spam version where the most fun is in the subject title: XXX w SENDS k LOVE LETTER XXX DON't MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY!

We send each other pictures of things we both love, like the dogs doing anything - or nothing.

Search some quotes sites maybe - here's one that I like:
Soul meets soul on love's lips. - Percy B. Shelly

Admirer as I think I am
Of stars that do not give a damn,
I cannot, now I see them, say
I missed one terribly all day.

and if
I were to say

I love you and
I do love you

and I say it
now and again

and again
would you say

would you see

Best answer: "When I am sad and weary,
When I think all hope is gone,
When I walk along High Holborn
I think of you with nothing on."
