How can I get started playing Strat-o-Matic baseball?

I'm a bit confused by all the different products for sale.

Best answer: You could start by playing it online. 2009 stats, pretty nice interface. I do this about once a year, pretty fun.

There are some hard-core junkies that ruin some of the leagues, but in general you'll have a good time.

Best answer: How old are you? How much time do you have? Do you prefer needing to have a computer available to play?

I played Strat-o-Matic a lot as a kid (started at age 7) and played the actual board game. That is to say, cards for players, rolling dice, moving markers around a board to keep track of baserunners, etc... I just introduced it to my 7-year-old son and he's the same way...likes to hold a stack of cards in his hand and roll the dice (along with keeping stats in a notebook). It all depends on how you like to interact with the game.

For computer based simulations, I'm told OOTP (Out of the Park) Baseball is simply on another level, so if you fantasize being a GM of a franchise and like simulating the games too, that probably is what you're looking for.

Response by poster: I am looking, ideally, for an intro to playing the actual board game, with dice, on a kitchen table.

So buy the board game (not the software) and get started. It's super easy. You can play with basic, advanced, or super-advanced rules.

Response by poster: Ok. I guess it comes with some default set of cards? The large number of add-ons throws me off.

my recommendation would be to by the whole set of 2008 player cards that comes with the complete game. All the other add-ons are for previous seasons.
