How to find buskers and street musicians/artists/performers without stumbling over them

I've set up a website showcasing NYC's street performers, among other things. It has just started, and I'm trying to tell artists about it. I've tried contacting MUNY and performers.net, with mixed results. Other than traveling Manhattan's streets with a business card, what other ways are there of getting in contact with the city's street artists?
Response by poster: thanks jessamyn, I didn't know about the projects page

Every year the MTA holds auditions for subway performing locations. Last year's audition was May 1. Maybe you could flier the people waiting to audition.

Response by poster: Thanks Kimdog. Yeah, I'm going to their next one. I saw the info on the MUNY (Music Under New York) website. I thought I'd chat to someone there about it, and they haven't gotten back to me. I don't think they're taking me seriously. Does my dad work there?

Why not post your information on Craigslist NYC in their "Community" section under Musicians and have them pass the word. I know that your project covers more than just Musicians, but this might be a good start in getting the word out.
