This website says it's "Mighty Fine Road." I haven't heard it to be able to say the genre, but from your description of its sound, it seems like it would fall under "roots."

Samples of the OST by Carter Burwell are listenable at AllMusic. The score is described as "mostly slow strings and dark brass", and the album (but not necessarily the film itself) is filled out with "Negro Spirituals ... remixed with modern synthesizer beds".

Whoops, posted instead of previewed. Continuing: and if you like that, that describes numerous songs on Moby's album Play, which is based on the Alan Lomax Collection of Southern folk music.

That's a great soundtrack. I think it's a two song end credit - these aren't the right versions, but it will help you see if it's the right music.

Now I'm interested and need to listen to this piece. Also, please please please punctuate anything you write on metafilter with capitals and so on. Eventually someone else will mention it and might not be tactful so I may as well say it now.
