What free security should I install on my PC with a switch to ADSL? And what is the replacement for Napster?

I am going ADSL later in the week. Apart from setting up XBox live, what free security should I install on my PC and also, what is the equivalent of Napster these days?

If you're looking for music, use slsk.

As for security... it's not free, but if you are getting XBox Live and you already have a PC, you probably should get a router. Most (if not all) have some built-in security.

For the firewall, get ahold of the old 2.x version of Kerio.

If I dug around, I might be able to find a copy.

I've always had better luck with WinMX.

you probably should get a router.

are there people selling DSL modems that aren't already routers? I've used five different units and they were all mini routers with port forwarding schemes and various security features already built in.

Frankly, the idea of a "software firewall" has always seemed mildly ludicrous to me, like taping a balloon to your steering wheel and calling it an airbag.

If I was the type of person that shared files, I would use Shareaza for it. It connects to multiple file sharing networks, and it even does torrents. It's open source, and apparently some people like that sort of thing.

Response by poster: thanks guys, in fact the ADSL is go now. got home and it was ready to go. I'm running Kerio 4 and AVG antivirus. I'll have a router by next week which will have some protection hopefully.

If you're looking for old versions of software, the best place to go is, well, oldversion.com. Currently, they have old versions of zone alarm, but not old versions of kerio. However, you can request old versions of software not currently listed.

Telus in Canada provides a plain adsl modem with their service.

I would say eMule for the filez..

I've found AVG, a router, and (importantly) not using IE or Outlook have kept me nice and safe for a couple of years.
