Missed Connections

Why won't my Samsung BD-P2500 Blu-Ray player connect to the internet through my router?

I've tried hopelessly for a while to google this problem, but everyone who seems to have it has no solution for it.

Here's the issue. My Blu-Ray player has a ethernet port on the back. When I connect it to the LAN ports on my nearby Dynex wireless G router, it won't connect to the internet (specifically Netflix instant viewing). When I plug it straight into my DSL modem, it connects just fine.

For reference, the security on my router is both WPA password and MAC address filtering. I've added the MAC address for the Samsung to the filter just to be safe, but I didn't think that would matter since the Samsung isn't connecting wirelessly to the router. I've tried putting the Samsung in the DMZ with no luck either.

Any help would be appreciated!

Have you looked through all the menus of the Samsung to make sure that you don't have to enable it, or something like that?

Here's where I'd start with troubleshooting:

Can you connect a computer or other device to a LAN port and successfully get to the net?

Is the player getting a proper IP address from the router? Can you ping the player?

Are you using DHCP and auto DNS in the player's setup? Maybe try setting that up manually.

I would try turning off MAC filtering -- yes, it will deny/allow no matter how a device is connected to the network.

Update router firmware.

Power cycle modem, wait for it to come back up. Power cycle router.

Response by poster: Well, I feel pretty stupid. My laptop won't connect to the internet if I try to go through the router in a wired configuration. There must just be something messed up with this router.

Thanks for the help!

I just stumbled on this question.

You can see if it's a software/configuration problem or a hardware problem - look for some lights to come on when you plug in your laptop, either by the jacks or on the front of the router. if there are no lights, it's hardware, & the router should be replaced.

It is likely mac filtering, & you'll have to add the laptop or player to the list by disabling filtering, plugging them in, then getting macs from the list of connected devices.

Good luck!
