Quality source for number of United States iPhone subscribers?

I need to cite how many US iPhone users there are, as of Q4 fiscal 2008 or Q1 fiscal 2009. Does anyone have a handy, reputable source?

Apple's quarterly statements seem to only list worldwide sales, and I can't find precise numbers in any AT&T filings. But, I'm bad at this.

I found this:The company also stated that since the Apple smartphone’s release in July 2008, there have been over 4.3 million activations. It's taken from an AT&T quarterly report announcement.

Response by poster: That only refers to the iPhone 3G.

My husband, who works for an AT&T subsidiary that provides commercial wifi including the free wifi for iPhones, suggests you look for that information in transcripts of AT&T's quarterly analyst calls. (He doesn't know the number or have a direct cite off the top of his head, sorry.)

As an interesting follow up, I would love to hear what percentage iphone users are compared to total US subscribers. If you happen to find this info, please do post it!
