What book did the Jonathan Creek writers read?

Tonight I was watching the Jonathan Creek episode titled "Gallows Gate". A man appears to die when he jumps out of a second story window but is later seen murdering his ex-girl friend. I know that I read this story in a book (without the magician elements of Jonathan Creek) but I can't remember the book or the detective. Help me sleep tonight by identifying this book
Response by poster: No, that is not my book. The one I remember is more of a traditional mystery.

It was a key plot device in Attack of the Unsinkable Rubber Ducks by Christopher Brookmyre (where the 'detective' is recurring character Jack Parlabane).
