Can anyone point me to any factual information, or provide a best guestimate as to how many iPhones have been sold, worldwide, to date.

Here's what Apple said in their Fourth Quarter Results.
During the first quarter of iPhone 3G availability ended September 27, 2008, 6.9 million units were sold, exceeding the 6.1 million first-generation iPhone units sold in the prior five quarters combined.
So 13 million factual plus some unknown number for October through now. Low estimate for that is probably 4 million, according to one analyst.
In other potentially bad news, Garnder cautioned that iPhone shipments for the quarter could come in below 4 million, which would represent a near 50 percent drop off from the 6.9 million units the company sold during the third calender quarter of the year, which embodied the launch of the iPhone 3G.
Apple will announce their number on January 21st.

+1 smackfu, apple reps will only share the previously announced numbers from a quarterly earnings report, so waiting for a week will be worth your while (unless you're betting on how many have been sold).
