Where to holiday in St Kitts.

I'm looking for recommendations for places to holiday in St Kitts.

I want to stay somewhere that is nice, clean, safe and relatively cheap(*) which is hopefully not owned by some American Conglomerate intent on sucking tourist dollars out of the area. A self catering cottage with 2 - 3 bedrooms would be best. Has anyone got any recommendations or advice on how best to proceed?

Side Issue:
I'm slightly concerned about what the local reaction to myself, my girlfriend & the kids will get. I'm white, she's black & the kids are sort of in the middle. Is there anybody in the know that has experience / advice in this area.

(*) When I say cheap - I'm happy to spend $2000-$3000 dollars for a fortnight. Again - 2 to 3 bedrooms; sleeping 4 (two children (one over 12) & 2 adults)

Just got back from honeymooning in St. Kitt's sister island, Nevis. Honestly we took a look at all the options on both islands while we were there and wished we'd stayed at the Oualie Beach Resort on Nevis. It's cottages right on Oualie Beach (literally, 20 steps to the water) which turns out to be pretty rare for accommodations in the area. Call and see if the studios are open for when you want. There's three and they can be connected together apparently.

The advantage to staying there is both the beech, a good restaurant (the Executive Chef is from Seattle, started a few months ago, and is a really nice fellow... oh and the food & drinks were excellent), and it's next door to Under The Sea, which is a snorkeling/diving outfit run by a marine biologist. They have a small museum for the kids to touch the creatures they'll see while in the sea and then can take everyone out to see the interesting spots, etc. I think there is a charter fishing outfit in there as well.

There is a ferry to get from St. Kitts to Nevis. It was $10/person plus a $1 "port fee". Little confusing with the schedules of the boats since it isn't centralized but Nevis1 seems to have the most up to date schedule. The St. Kitts taxi from the airport to the ferry was cheap. $10, I think, and both ways it was a huge van. Really nice.

Be aware mold allergens are very high right now. Apparently it's less so in the "dry season", but that's also the most expensive time to go.

Response by poster: Nevis isn't really an option. The Girlfriend has family in Kitts, and although we don't want to stay with them for 14 days, we do plan on being around them at times after the last ferry sets off. Thanks for the info though.
