any suggestions for what this record/band might be

sorry if this is just so insanely obscure it is impossible. I heard this record that was apparantly a new york band. It was pretty obscure (probably the kind of thing reviewed in the Wire or a similar magazine) and may be classed under such genres as 'new weird america' or freak folk. Musically it was sort of a mishmash of electronica and some feedback and acousticy stuff with a male vocalist, and (this is the key thing) was a double album and probably quite recent (2007 or 08). May have been considered suitable for a late night mood. Any suggestions?

That sounds exactly like Jerk Off Jack Off Frig Face, but I don't know if they have a double album.

They don't have a double album so it probably isn't Akron/Family but it's worth a shot.

Sounds a bit like Tunng, but they're definitely not a New York band. (You could do worse than check them out, mind.)

Response by poster: neither of these bands, yet. but I like the sounds of them both!

Could it be Ariel Pink's Fast Forward/Scared Famous? It was re-released recently as a single LP, but I know the first release (2002) this was a double album. The description kind-of fits the bill.

i forgot that Ariel Pink is not NY based. Oops. Good luck!

Wedlock by Sunburned Hand of Man? It's a New Weird America double album, but from 2005.

you should look into a subgenre of music called "anti-folk", and try NY based bands.

somewhat of a stretch for your criteria, but the recent, double-LP, electronica, and feedback all scream "Street Horrsing" by the Fuck Buttons to me. but they're not from New York, and I don't know that I would describe their music as "suitable for a late night mood"

This is probably way off, but I'll offer up Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams just in case.

Digital Ash in a Digital urn/ I'm Wide Awake by Bright Eyes? Not NY and a bit older than you think but sounds kind of like it might fit.

Response by poster: I reckon it may have been Sunburned hand of the man. I'm quite into music, but the past few years had a sort of new music sabbatical and haven't heard every single new record of note like I used to do in my more boring teen and college years. Thanks mefites!
