Sound of Apple ][+ booting?

Where can I found the sound of an Apple ][+ drive booting? I used to spend a lot of time on an Apple ][+ and I miss the dududududu-DU (pause) CHUKKA CHUKKA du (click). Other Apple ][+ sounds would be fun as well.

Your Apple II emulators should have them.

Virtual II is a shareware MacOSX emulator that includes disk sounds. Almost all the emulators I've used have sound emulation but not disk head movement sounds. Virtual II is the only exception I know of.

While we're on the topic, how about the sound of and Imagewriter II printer powering on? You know, ehhhhhhhhh-ee-ada-uh-uh-uh.

Oh, god, Virtual II is orgasmic.

If you're currently running a Mac, Mactracker provides a database of all Apple hardware with its specifications. Luckily, they throw in their startup chimes for your convenience!

If you need the actual sound file, I'm sure you could right-click on it in Finder, show package contents, and dig around for it (sorry, I'm being a little lazy).

Oops, there's a Windows version too!

If you want some more sounds, shoot me a MeFiMail (MeMail?) and I'll record them tonight. I have a few different models gathering dust in the basement, but they should all still work.

In an odd turn of events, my recording equipment is buried in the garage. The Apple(s) is/are all ready to go, but I won't be able to record them until sometime Friday. I'll definitely post a link once it's all done!

Response by poster: Thanks, Niles, for your generous offer. For everyone else, I've looked at the links you kindly suggested and done my own searches based on those. There doesn't seem anything that's quite like what I want. The one found by boeing82 isn't right somehow, and other emulators either don't have sound effects or (in the case of Virtual II) has no way to save them.

Best answer: Hey everyone, just an update. I've been working with different recording set ups, and I just can't get the recording to sound like what I'm hearing. I think my mics are having some problems. Ideally I'll be able to grab a new type of mic in the next 3 or 4 days which should do the trick. Sorry this is taking so long!
    Here's a list of what I'm recording:
  • Apple IIe
  • Apple IIc
  • Apple IIc+
  • ImageWriter II
I'm digging through the basement so I might find a few other things over the next week as well. I know I have a Commodore 64 around somewhere...

Best answer: The sounds in Virtual II are just bundled files inside the application bundle. You don't need to save them. You just need to get them out of the bundle. Right click on the app and select "Show package contents" then open the "Contents/Resources" folder. There are ".snd" and ".aiff" files for the sounds. ".snd" files are in the old Sun audio format and will require conversion. Drag copies of them onto the desktop before doing anything to them, of course.

Since this just popped up in my recent activity, I wanted to let everyone know that I can not get my recording equipment to play nice. It's really frustrating, because this seemed like a fun little project to do, but something's wrong somewhere in my setup. And I have no idea what it is.

grrrr.
