How about "Red" by King Crimson?

Here's a live version from the double trio days.

Sum 41: Grab the Devil by the Horns and **** Him Up the ***
Chevelle: Open (which runs right into the second song Point #1, so I don't know how well that will work for you)

Eruption! From the first Van Halen record. The mother of all record-opening guitar solos.

Except Eruption is track #2 on that album. Otherwise it would be perfect. Although you could cheat a little bit and say it's from the first Greatest Hits album, where it is the first track.

Converge - First Light | off the album "You Fail Me"

Great track, great album, I thought a lot of people were too critical of this one because it was so different from Jane Doe. The whole YFM album is a paean to mid-90s noise rock and the Jesus Lizard influence is really, really apparent. You should check out Then Comes Dudley, the lead off track to the Jesus Lizard's album "Goat" if you're not aware of it already, it has a similar extended instrumental lead in with lots of skronky guitar work.

Check out The Answers's Never Too Late EP. I love that opener.

Also, Van Halen's Fair Warning opens with what might just be the most badass guitar solo intro ever committed to vinyl :)

Man, this shows just how unreliable (my) memory is. I have vivid, vivid memories of that cut being track 1. Must've been a custom mix tape I had, or something.

"Intro/Sweet Jane" off of Rock And Roll Animal. It doesn't get any better than that.

Surfing with the Alien opens with the eponymous track. Here's a YouTube video of him playing it live and faster, and if you think you have the chops, he shows you how to play it.

Maybe it doesn't count in the age of the CD, but Peace - a Theme kicks off side 2 of the King Crimson album In the Wake of Poseidon.

No. You're all wrong. Welcome to the Jungle on Guns N Roses' Appetite For Destruction. My boyfriend has even banned me from telling him it's the ultimate opening riff on any album every time it comes on in the car. I say it every effing time.

On further inspection, have I mis-read the question?? Anyway, I still stand by the opening riff part, even if it has lyrics alllll over it. Sorry!
