What rank did Sean Connery achieve in the Royal Navy?

I find lots of mentions that Connery joined the Navy and was discharged after three years for health reasons. What rank was he when he became discharged?

Several references suggest that his final posting was as Able Seaman aboard the HMS Formidable (e.g. International Stars at War).

Thanks! My searches were really confounded because of the various ranks of the characters he's played. This is a big help.
