Where can I find Kinder Suprise Eggs in L.A.?

Where can I find Kinder Suprise Eggs in Alhambra (or barring that, the greater L.A. area)?

I called the couple of places that come up when you google "kinder suprise eggs Los Angeles" and neither of them carry them any longer- does anyone have any good suggestions? Thanks!

I seem to recall seeing them at Joan's on Third a few years ago, but they might not carry them any more, either. (Incidentally, the whole "ooh, can't sell Kinder eggs in America because DEATH AWAITS" thing is so weird.)

I don't think they're still at Joan's, but we've purchased them at Mel & Rose and at the french grocery at the Farmer's Market.

The Mel & Rose website claims they still stock them.

More ideas in this older Chowhound thread - in fact, you may want to resurrect this thread, since quite a few CH posters are in the SGV area.

Yeah, I was always under the impression that you can't get them in the US at all because the prizes constitute a choking hazard. Weird, because they're all over the place here in Canada and I haven't yet seen the streets littered with blue-faced children.

No specific suggestions, but you could call local European grocery stores, delis, and the like. The tiny deli down the street from us carries them (in San Diego, unfortunately), but their website doesn't list many of the specific products they carry.,

roger ackroyd's right -- I've seen them at Monsieur Marcel in Farmer's Market too, and more recently than I saw them at Joan's.

Not in L.A., but my neighborhood Middle Eastern grocery has a nice display of them at point-of-sale. Wikipedia sez:

There are some stores in the United States that sell genuine Kinder Eggs, often in conjunction with other imported British or other European sweets, although their importation is technically illegal due to the 1938 law and 1997 recall.

natabat has the right idea.

I always see them at the Cost Plus World Market in Glendale, maybe try a Cost Plus nearer to you?

You can order them from Canada: The Dutch Market. Those prices are in $US.

There used to be a place up here in Washington State I'd order from, but they've gone out of business. It appears that you can't import them as food, which may be what put the other importers out of business, but there seems to be a loophole.

I used to think Kinder Eggs were German, but it turns out they originated in Italy. As of August, Germany was planning to ban them. I'm not sure how someone can still claim to be selling the "superior" German chocolate versions for Christmas 2008.

Whoa! The Dutch Market shipping charges are outrageous! It looks like it would be cheaper to order 48 from Germany. And for the german distributor, you have to click on "Food and Candy" to see the Kinder Egg order page.

Most European grocers seem to have them. The last place I saw them in my small Midwestern city was at the Russian grocer.

The one place I actually remember seeing them is the UCLA biomedical bookstore. I'm guessing that is not helpful and believe me, I was surprised to see them there. But I *feel* like I've seen them in the Westwood Cost Plus as well.

I bought a whole case of them in Torrance at the Alpine Village market. That was about 5 years ago though.

Just want to vouch that I was at Mel & Rose this morning and there were several dozen of these by the register.
