Keep our rug from sliding

What's the best type of padding for an oriental rug on a heated floor?

We're looking to buy padding for a large (and thin) oriental rug, but we're not sure what material to get. The ideal padding would keep the rug from sliding out of place and would protect it from the heated floor. A slight bit of added thickness to the carpet would also be nice, but we don't want anything too thick. Foam is what we usually use under carpets, but we're worried about it holding in heat and breaking down quickly. We got an "area rug gripper" made of some sort of rubbery material in a checkerboard pattern from Home Depot to try out- it keeps the rug in place and adds just enough thickness to feel nice, but it smells awful. The packaging says it's made in China but doesn't say what it's made out of, which is worrying. (Plus it was kind of expensive.)
Googling for the best type of rug pads turns up mostly stores and not much advice. I'm not at all knowledgeable about rugs and what not (is padding even the right term here?) so any information on this is very welcome! Thanks!
