Pen/small item organizer insert for backpack exterior pocket?

I'm considering a new backpack (as in I have it and have to decide whether to return it.) Most things about it are good, but it lacks the bunch of pockets for pens and other things that I've come to rely on. The exterior pocket is about 11"x12" -- anyone know of an organizer insert that would fit that space?

Searching old questions, I already saw Tom Bihn's Freudian Slip. It's too big, but that's the sort of thing I'm looking for.

Best answer: I got one of these. It's small enough to fit your exterior pocket, and might be what you're looking for.

i use one of those bdu pouches for some stuff, but if you're going to have several of them, you might want something clear. or else get them in several colors, ideally colors that look less like each other under poor lighting.

A google search for purse organizers turns up a bunch of things that may work for you. Quite a few of them are a little more bulky than what I imagine you would want.

You might also consider reusing the pouches and pen holders from an old bag. You could easily cut them out of a bag no one is using and sew them into the new bag.

Now that you've brought it up, I may just have to sew one up for my bike panniers.
