Interstate Sidewalk?

Driving south on I-85 from Atlanta to Montgomery, a person passes something that looks like a sideway running for several miles down the median of the interstate. What gives?

I think you meant sidewalk, not sideway.

The GDOT website lists two projects:

I-85 Reconstruction/Widening Projects (Meriwether/Coweta/Fulton)

I-85/West Point Interchange Project (Troup County)

You're probably referring to the first project in which they might be putting in a new center median as part of the work on I-85.

My husband and I had the same question awhile back about the "sidewalk" in the median of Georgia 400: it's part of a safety barrier. Here is an explaination of that project.
