How can I find a freelance illustrator to do some work for a small web project I'm working on? How much should I expect to pay?

I need about 10-20 small, fairly simple illustrations for a new website I'm working on, and I don't think I trust my own artistic talent enough to do them myself. Where can I go online to find illustrators/artists who are both talented and interested in a small project like this? And how much would something like this typically cost?

Posting to MeFi Jobs couldn't hurt. I know of at least a couple of skilled freelance illustrators who are mefites, and I'm sure there are more. Of course, the odds are probably better that they're reading AskMe, so well-played!

You may try using pixish.

You could try Etsy Alchemy also -- people can bid on your job there.

Check your local art college. Many have boards for posting jobs just like this.

Here's some of my work if any of it is in a style you're interested in. I'd be less expensive than some other illustrators because it's not my only source of income. Drop me a mail or MeFi mail if you're interested!

Not as "in community" as others have posted, but I've had very very good luck with Elance for illustratiors. Lots of variety so you can find someone who's style matches your vision.

As for price, you can search around their site for similar projects to refine your bid, but I'd guess a couple hundred dollars.

I'd be happy to do one or two of them for you, if you like the style then we could make arrangements for the rest of the set. I'm one of the aforementioned art-school kids, so of course I'd work for cheap.

99Designs.com (formerly Sitepoint Contests) is a service my brother the web designer recommends when you need design on the cheap, and are willing to put in some time.

Basically, they run a contest for designers to develop what you want. You write a brief, set a deadline, put up a prize (typically 100-500 bucks), and provide feedback (which can also help designers to refine their entries). At the deadline, you select a winner, pay the prize, and get the design.

You can check out existing contests to see what prizes/timeframes get the best quality entries for your type of project.

Good luck to you!
