What's the deal with your nickname? How did you get it? If your nickname is self-explanatory, then tell everyone when you first started using the internet, and what was the first thing that made you say "wow, this isn't just a place for freaks after all?" Was it a website? Was it an email from a long-lost friend? Go on, spill it.
Nickname from handle I chose when I BBS'd back in high school in Duluth, MN.
Not a reference to the David Bowie song or film, sorry. The real reason is pretty lame: I used to doodle stars. Starman seemed like a good a handle as any and I stuck with it across BBSes. MetaFilter is the closest thing to a BBS I use now, so here I am.
Started BBSing with a 2400bps modem on a Mac Classic.
Eventually upgraded to an Acer/Acros 486DX/2 (which was amazing) and ran my own board called The Wormhole (218) with some friends.
Started using the internet a little bit in high school, 1995 or so, then the web on a regular basis in college in '96.
