West away from Yellowstone: north thru Montana; or south thru Idaho?

Driving back to the Pacific from Yellowstone NP, seem like the options are between leaving via the north exit and taking I-90 through Bozeman, Butte, Missoula and Spokane; and leaving the west exit and taking I-84 through Idaho: Twin Falls and Boise. Which is better? [more inside]

Yellowstone Flooding - Do I need to move to a Plan B for early August?

I have a trip coming up to Yellowstone National Park in early August. Given the ongoing terrible flood event and road washouts, and park evacuation etc, checking if anyone has informed opinions on likelihood of North entrance or large parts of the park being closed / impacted for an extended period. Yellowstone Summer 2021

Spouse and I are headed out to the American West for a wedding soon (early Sept 2021) and planned to sneak a brief day trip into Yellowstone while we were out there. I'm mostly interested in advice from anyone who has been there this summer regarding how disorganized or busy it is; the Yellowstone website says there's no entry reservations going on. [more inside]

Driving I80 Through Wyoming in October - Snow? Alternate Routes?

I have to drive from Reno to Des Moines on October 7 and 8. I have two questions about the route, particularly about the pass between Laramie and Cheyanne: How likely is it that the pass will be dangerous or closed on those dates? And are the other routes (either through Denver or through Sioux City) safer or less likely to be snowy/closed? [more inside]

Devils Tower, Wyoming by public transport - is this possible?

I have a significant birthday coming up in a year or so, and am seriously comtemplating spending the actual day at the location of my favorite movie. But I don't (conventionally) drive, and may be totally reliant on public transport. Options appear to be ... zero. No Amtrak lines, and no coach lines (unless I've missed an obscure one). Is it possible at all to get there, in September, without driving? If not, how much - roughly - would a cab/taxi cost from the nearest town or city with a public transport connection?

How to spend the night before the eclipse this August in Jackson WY?

My partner and I are flying into Jackson, WY the day before the solar eclipse this August. We're really excited to check it out the next day but are behind the curve in planning things so there is absolutely no lodging available around there for the night. Everything I've checked has no vacancies and the few things left on airbnb are >$1000. [more inside]

1 year old, thanksgiving, midwest. Go

I live a couple of hours south of Chicago. Given a 4 hour driving radius, what would be a good place to go with a 14 month toddler? I don't expect her to make any memories from this trip, so it's really more of a trip for her parents (us!) . [more inside]

Wyoming / Tetons Filter: Should we cancel our trip due to smoke?

To those who live in or around Jackson Hole / Tetons / Teton Valley etc, what is the air quality like there now? Myself and my SO are planning to take an annual backpacking / hiking / camping trip to the area next Friday and I'm wondering if the fallout from the fires in ID / MT will make it all too unpleasant... Lodging near Yellowstone National Park

We going to be visiting Yellowstone sometime in the next two weeks (our dates are flexible). Lodging inside the park is sold out. Can anyone recommend some good places to stay near the park? We'd like to spend less than $200/night but we might be willing to pay more for a great place or location. We also want to stay at a good dude ranch near Yellowstone or Grand Teton NP for a few days.

Carry-on bag options

I'm looking for low cost ideas for a carry-on bag. It's got to meet United Airline carry-on regulations (14" x 9" x 22"). Ideally, I'd like to be able to stash it under the seat, rather than overhead, since I'm small and it's hard to heft a loaded bag over my head. My son will be travelling with me, so that's not a hard and fast request-he can certainly get a bag in the overhead! Details: we're going to Signal Mountain Resort in the Grand Tetons, Wyoming beginning of September, for 6 days. Casual dress, hiking boots are what we'll be carrying with us. I am good at condensed packing, but have never tried to take a carry-on for this length of time. We'll be staying with my daughter and her husband, so we'll be able to skip a good amount of personal care stuff; we'll borrow from them, or get sample sizes when we get out there. I have not been here before, so hints and tips specific to packing for this area would be most welcome.

Please help a family of four with an outdoorsy but non-camping trip to the Grand Tetons and Salt Lake City!

Our family of four (Mom, Dad, 2 boys ages 8 & 12) wants to enjoy Yellowstone Park, the Grand Tetons, and possibly shoot down to the Salt Lake City area for about a week in late July 2012. We love the outdoors, but can't bring camping gear. Will we be able to find spontaneous lodging in cheap hotels or cabins for under $100 per night - or do we need to book everything waaay in advance?
