A hotel lobby... plated in copper?

When I was very young, in the late '70s, my family visited Salt Lake City and stayed at (or went to) a hotel that I remember as having a hotel lobby made out of, or mostly plated in, copper. I vaguely remember it being somehow linked with a nearby massive copper mine (which I assume was the Bingham Canyon Mine). My Mom said that she vaguely remembered the hotel as well, but couldn't provide more information. Google has gotten me absolutely nowhere. Was this an actual place?

Help me understand the logic of the roads in the desert southwest

I’ve had the opportunity to travel around the southwest a few times and I’ve always been struck by how there’s been miles and miles of lonely but relatively well-maintained tarmac. The roads are not in horrible shape, it looks like there’s been an effort to patch them in places, but the traffic along them is so sparse that it’s been ok to bicycle for hours on them in some areas. Why do they exist? I’m lost on how any of these roads make any economic sense. [more inside]

I know that both parks are extremely popular, so I'm looking for some advice for hikes or trails that may be less crowded (we will also be going through Monument Valley and the Goose Necks later in the trip). Zion/Bryce in Dead of Winter

Mrs sandmanwv and I are thinking of doing Zion/Bryce maybe South Rim Grand Canyon over Xmas-New Years Holidays. Is this a good idea? We are not super experienced hikers/campers but will enjoy the scenery. We're hedging by getting cancellable lodging. Would there be an nature-alternative from Vegas in case there's a snowstorm?

Hiking in Zion

I am headed to Zion National Park to do some solo hiking over the 4th of July weekend. From what I understand it is going to be extremely hot and crowded. For anyone who has been there before, can you offer some tips on logistics, stuff to pack, recommended hikes, beating the heat, etc. I will be staying in Springdale. I would like to do The Narrows but will avoid Angel's Landing due to my trouble with heights. Any info you can provide that would make this awesome would be much appreciated.
