My GF and I will be visiting Big Bend National Park in late July, and we would like to take a 2-day river tour, probably in Santa Elena Canyon (although I'd love to hear if you think a different one is better for some reason). There are several tour companies listed on the wikitravel page, but I don't know which one would be the best choice. Have you gone on such a trip, and can you recommend or caution against any particular tour company? [more inside]posted by crookedgrin around Big Bend National Park, TX at 2:03 PM - 5 answers

I will be arriving around 5 PM, might take me until 6 PM to get to the hotel on Sunday. It's a business related trip, but since I'll be working normal office hours, I can work around it and still try to have some kind of fun. I've never been to Dallas. What can you suggest to me that might be fun? [more inside]posted by camylanded around Dallas, TX at 2:30 PM - 5 answers
My company has offered me a weekend at a B&B in the Texas Hill Country in thanks for 10 years of service. Looking on the web there appear to be thousands of them, with wildly scattered reviews depending on which review site one chooses. Having had mixed experiences with B&B's, I thought I'd turn to the green for suggestions. If you've been to one in that area that you would recommend (or steer us away from), please write below. posted by Runes around San Antonio, TX at 7:19 AM - 3 answers
Hi, can anyone give me an approximate time scale of the shuttle service between the TRE Centreport Station and DFW Airport?
If I've read it correctly on the airport's website, the shuttle leaves every 15-30 mins from Centreport, then I change at South Remote Parking for the shuttle to Terminal D, which leaves every 15 mins. But I can't find even a vague idea of how long these trips will take so I can decide which trains to catch.

I am attending the Roller Derby World Cup
in Dallas, TX on December 4-7, 2014. The event will be held at Fair Park (the Dallas fairgrounds). I am wondering if it would be feasible to rent a bike as my mode of transportation in Dallas. [more inside]posted by stompadour around Dallas, TX at 2:25 PM - 7 answers

I'm taking a trip to Houston this weekend, and as it's Lunar New Year, I'm quite interested to see if the good people of AskMe know of any cool stuff happening in relation to that this weekend. I found this event
, but I'm hoping to be pointed to more!

Where can retired Alaska snowbirds find a rental along the Texas gulf coast? By that I do not mean where are the nice beaches, as I know the answers to that question. I need to know HOW to find a rental by the month that includes linens, a furnished kitchen, cable, and internet. VRBO, Craigslist, airbnb, and other sources have failed. Everything I find is daily/weekly and incredibly expensive. I hope to travel from mid Jan thru mid Feb and $900 to $1100 per month seams reasonable to me. The specific location is not as important as price, and a beach view. posted by woman around Pearland, TX at 6:27 PM - 4 answers

We'll be spending time in Bryan-College Station over Thanksgiving. Where can we get in a long run -- say, 7-10 miles -- that isn't concrete? Crushed granite paths would be ideal, but I'm not holding my breath. posted by starkraven around College Station, TX at 4:27 AM - 2 answers

I'm in San Antonio. I am going to be 1,454 miles short of making platinum on United Airlines at the end of the year. I'm trying to find a site or something that would allow me to find the cheapest round trip flight that would get me another 1,500 miles I could make on a single day before the year is out. Is there anything like this? [more inside]posted by nushustu around San Antonio, TX at 1:42 PM - 16 answers

We'll be staying in Fort Worth this weekend. I've read that there are some nice crushed gravel trails along the Trinity River. From my review of the trail map, it looks like the crushed gravel portion begins west of downtown, just a little north of Trinity Park. So, we'd like to choose the most convenient decent hotel to that portion of the trail. Fort Worthers, are there any decent hotels just a hop, skip, and a jump away? There's a conference I'd like to go to in Austin at the beginning of November, but Minipenny is still breast feeding which complicates things. Misterpenny and I talked about making it a short family trip. A couple of days (well, day and a half) on our own and then a day and a half (and at least one evening) of him being on full childcare duties and me at the conference.
I used to have the conference travel down, and enjoyed getting to see a bit of a new city, but it's a whole new ballgame now...we've never traveled with the baby, and have never been to Austin, so I'm having trouble knowing how to go about the planning, or if this is even a good idea. My partner and I are headed to San Antonio at the end of July so that he can go to a conference and I can visit Texas for the first time. We like cities, and nature, and are especially interested in how people organize and live together in whatever communities they've got (ie. social & political history and sociology). Other happy holiday finds have included biking Montreal's The Main and La Chine Canal, the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago and taking 3 kinds of trains to get to a hilltop overlooking Vienna.
