Pittsburgh: Riding the choo choo with Daddy

What's fun around a Pittsburgh Light Rail stop for a 2.5-year-old? I'm taking my toddler-daughter for a ride on the train tomorrow. Last week we went to Dormont Park. What should we do this week? I haven't spent much time in the South Hills. (I'm looking to go South, not North - we know the North Side in-and-out) Meal suggestions also welcome!

Walking around downtown Pittsburgh?

My partner and I are very excited about our trip to Pittsburgh next month! But I have a question about walkability. We'll be staying downtown on Penn Avenue and it looks like we can walk to a lot of places quite easily, but should we? We are big walkers and our city is very residential downtown, but it seems Pittsburgh's downtown gets pretty empty at that a concern re: safety or for any other reason? [more inside]

Pleasant stops on a road trip between Philadelphia and Buffalo?

I'm planning a road trip from Philadelphia to Toronto in October. I'm thinking of breaking up the trip by staying a night somewhere in between. Somewhere with a cute hotel, a nice breakfast and somewhere to wander around before taking off the next day. Just by google mapping it, I'm thinking Ithica, but id be welcome to other suggestions. Secondary question: are there any great hidden food spots to catch on the way? Thanks!

Fourscore and seven million visitors?

I was thinking of taking my daughter to Gettysburg this coming (Labor Day Weekend) Saturday. How are the crowds at Gettysburg, or other National Historic Battlefields, during the LDW? Are they hyper-crowded because this is the big weekend, or are the crowds all getting drunk and the lake and the beach, leaving the historic parks to the (relatively) serious? Bonus points if you know of other fun things to do with a 12 year old girl this specific weekend in the MD-DC area. You can assume we're pretty well-informed about the general lay of the land (smithsonian, zoos, aquaria, capitol, etc).

Hello Pittsburgh — vacation questions

I am looking into a trip to Pittsburgh for a long weekend getaway in the Fall. Things we (two females/40ish) think would be fun:
  • The Mattress Factory
  • The Andy Warhol Museum
  • Fallingwater and maybe Kentuck Knob
    • Is there anything else not to miss?

PhillyFilter: Random Rittenhouse Square Interestingness?

Girlfriend and I are going to Philadelphia tomorrow -- the plan is to eat fried chicken and donuts, hang out in a hotel room, go out and eat and drink some more, then go back to the hotel. We've been to Philly a bunch of times for various cultural things, and are big fans, but this trip the concept is basically: Do Almost Nothing. Still, we might want to take a stroll in the afternoon. Staying at the Radisson on 17th & Locust. Anything nearby we might not know about and should check out?

And I was really looking forward to this trip, too!

I'm supposed to be at a B&B in Philadelphia tomorrow evening, and right now I'm in Brooklyn. I don't have a car, rail isn't running, busses leave from parts of the city that are extremely difficult to access and I'm not even sure I could get a ticket. Suggestions? Am I not thinking of something? [more inside]
