Vacation scope creep - embrace or avoid?

I am in the planning stages of a summer vacation, and am stressing about scope creep. We are flying from the east to the Big Island of Hawaii. Direct flights aren’t an option, and most flights have layovers, generally in California. It got me thinking…and then over thinking. Should we stop in ie. San Francisio on the way there for a couple of days, and maybe L.A. for a couple of ways on the way back? I have not been to either city. Or is that silly, and we should just extend our stay in Hawaii from a week to say 10-12 days ? [more inside]

How to do Hawai'i cheap (and what about visiting the Volcano there?)

How's the volcano-watching on the Big Island these days? Thinking about a week in Hawaii for Spring Break and would love to hear any of your tips and tricks. Will it be worth it (or too expensive) to fly into HNL and then out of KOA on the Big Island; or should we just give up on any Kilauea sight-seeing and spend all of our time on Oahu? [more inside]

Help me plan my Big Island trip!

I'm planning a trip to the Big Island of Hawaii and I'm trying to figure out how many nights to spend on each side. Most people say you shouldn't spend more than 3 nights in Hilo but it seems like we might want more -- is this enough time? [more inside]

Hawaii With Limits

On Monday, my partner and I leave for a 12-day trip to Hawaii (the Big Island and Maui) with his mother, who is in remission from leukemia and who can't do more than an (easy) mile hike here and there. I'm looking for suggestions on ways for us all to make the most of this trip, despite these limits. [more inside]

Hawaii for a mixed group at the worst possible time?

I'll be traveling with a friend to meet my sister and her husband in Hawaii over Christmas. It's the worst possible set of dates, I know. But it is the only set of dates which works. I'm looking for help in choosing between islands and hotel/hiking recommendations. I'm also looking for recommendations in Honolulu. [more inside]

Staying in Lahaina in June - what are your recommendations?

We'll be there in early June, with access to a car, for about a week. Accommodations are sorted, but we'll be free for most of the days. This thread had lots of great recommendations, but I don't want to miss anything. Two adults in average shape, neither of us are SCUBA certified, but we might like snorkeling. Looking online has my head spinning.

Car rental in Maui?

I've just booked a trip for three to Maui. We're staying near the Kaanapali Beach, but would like to explore the forests and volcanoes and all the groovy nature stuff. Should I rent a small car to get around, or is there fairly reliable public transport? Renting a car isn't that expensive, but hotel does have parking fees, and I'm not sure how hard it is to find parking around the island.

The Big Island (Hawaii) for 4 days, help me plan a great trip!

I (36-year-old female) am traveling from Boston to Hawaii in early March for 10 days. Planning on 4 days and 4 nights on my own on the Big Island, sandwiched between three days on Oahu and three on Kauai where I will have company. For logistical reasons, I’m in some hurry to book my flights to/from TBI, and so am trying to nail down my itinerary. I’m also inflexible on days of the week on TBI. I’m thinking of one of these two itineraries: [more inside]

Hawaii Hotels with Zero Entry Pools

We are looking to stay in Kauai (or possibly another Hawaiian island) for a week in the spring and am having the hardest time finding a place to stay that has a zero-entry pool, a separate sleeping area, a/c, and is priced under $300/night. Nice dinner with vegetables on Oahu

I'm on vacation with my husband and his family on Oahu, and I swear I've eaten more animal protein this week than I usually eat in a month. Where can my husband and I go for a nice, sit-down meal tonight that will hopefully include lots of vegetables? We're staying in Kailua, so preferably somewhere nearby, and I don't want to spend more than about $25 per entree. Thanks!
