Miami for these nerdy brooklynites!

My husband and I want to go on vacation this spring. We're thinking Miami! We'll spend about a week, probably in mid-march. We'd love your opinion on all things miami. Where to go, where to stay, and are we going to be able to do this when we don't drive a lick? We've never been to south florida. What should we do?! [more inside]

What city in Southwest Florida is the best place to live?

I'll be finishing a masters degree in school counseling and have given some thought to moving from Idaho to Florida. Big jump, I know. So far Tallahassee, Gainesville, and Southwest Florida appeal to me the most. I'd like some info and advice on SW Florida. [more inside]

Anybody used Lyft in Orlando (from the airport and back)?

I am thinking about using lyft to get to and from the Orlando airport to my Disney world resort. Usually it's $70 by cab but lyft gives an estimate in the 30s, so it's tempting. My flight gets in at 11pm however so I am worried there won't be any availibily then. Also when taking it back to the airport I obviously need it to reliably pick me up. A couple questions: 1) anybody ever done this and what was the experience? 2) what is the wait time for pick up? 3) what was the cost?

Short-term rental in Florida

A friend of mine and a friend of hers would like to spend 6-8 or 10 weeks in Florida, starting in mid-January until some point in March. Any resources for a relatively cheap stay in/around Orlando or WPB/Ft. Lauderdale? Budget ~$1500 USD per month, total. [more inside]

Sarasota downtown or "nice walks" lodging with kitchen-type facilities?

Sarasota Where-To-Stay: We want to stay in Sarasota, Florida, USA, Dec. 27-30 to visit with my dude's parents. Can anybody recommend a nice place to stay with kitchenette-type facilities (i.e., at least refrigerator/microwave - or maybe a friendly BNB) with _somewhere_ nice to walk, i.e., not located on a high-traffic road with nothing nearby but uninteresting industrial stuff, nail salons, or chain stores? I'm working with a travel agent, and have looked around a bit myself, so this is a long shot. [more inside]

Disney World / Orlando Studios / Quiet-ish Beach vacation advice

I'm super bad at planning travel stuff and I'm trying to take a vacation with my girlfriend at the end of December. We'd like to do 3 nights at a quiet-ish beach within reasonable driving distance of Disney World and Universal Studios (because Harry Potter) in Orlando, and 4 nights doing both of those theme parks. First time Disney planner here, and I don't know anything about Florida beaches really. [more inside]

The air/sea interface for a Miami/Nassau cruise ship passenger.

I'm going with some family on a 4 day 3 night cruise from Miami to Nassau and back. Yay! I've got the flying part and the sitting on a boat sipping umbrella drinks part down, but I have questions about some of the interstitial parts of the trip. [more inside]

Help me find a low-key party location in Orlando

I'm planning an alumni party for my workplace's residents and fellows who will be at the national annual meeting for our specialty. The conference is at the Orange County Convention Center. I'm looking for a place within walking distance of the conference, with good food (doesn't have to be fine dining, or anything, but needs to be tasty) and a pleasant ambiance where our doctors can catch up on what they've been up to for the past year. It'll be a Tuesday night in September. [more inside]

Touring Plans, Disney World-MK 2day plan for junior pirates - thoughts?

We are off to Disney World, Orlando in just a couple of weeks. We have a 3 day pass with the water park + more option. We are 2 adults, a 5.5 yr old who will hit the height threshold, and a 9.5 year. We haven’t travelled there before. We are planning on visiting MK for 2 days, and leaning towards the zoo for the 3rd day. We want to see both water parks and the arcade. We are planning on following Touring Plan’s Magic Kingdom Two-Day Touring Plan for Junior Pirates and Adventures Ages 4-8. [more inside]

Long overnight layover at FLL- what are my options?

I land in Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday night at 8PM, and my 1-hour flight from FLL back home isn't until 7AM the following morning. What's a guy to do? When I transited through FLL last week, it didn't strike me as a lively airport. Any 24-hour coffee shops or restaurants in the airport? The Sheraton Hotel has a free shuttle and a bar open until midnight, so I could do that or get a room if I'm really willing to do that. Luggage is not an issue. Is one of those my best option?

The Santa Barbara of Florida -- does it exist?

Aside from Miami, does Florida have any place that has a culture not predominantly catering to retirees, families, or tourists? I'm an early thirties guy looking to spend a weekend somewhere in the state with a friend that's interesting, authentic, and youthful. Being near water is a nice to have, but not a requirement.
