Rome Neighborhoods Without the Sights

Best neighborhood in Rome for eating pasta and going to the playground/park? Traveling solo with a toddler so we'll be eating nice lunches, going on long walks (in a stroller), visiting playgrounds and parks. Need easy access to the airport. November travel, [more inside]

Useful/Essential apps for visiting Rome?

USAian visiting Rome in a few weeks - trying to load up my phone with apps I might use there. So far I've got Omio, The Fork, Tiqets, Maps.me and a couple of others. What are your best recommendations? Is there a good Uber/Lyft equivalent or Taxi app?

Your favorite restaurants in Rome

My girlfriend and I are headed to Rome in October, so we'd love your recommendations for your favorite restaurants! Any and all suggestions are welcome, for all price ranges and types of restaurants. (It's just the two of us, no kids.) The only thing we want to avoid are touristy places. Ciao!

Masking and vax proof, Rome 2023 edition

I'm going to be travelling internationally, to Rome, for the first time since the pandemic, right at the New Year. It looks like all testing requirements have been lifted at the border crossings into the EU, and there are no mask requirements for public transit in Rome, but what's the general vibe otherwise? Where to stay / what not to miss in Rome?

I will be spending around four days in Rome in September before striking out to Puglia. I've never really had an abiding desire to go to Rome, but it makes sense for meeting up with travelers coming from the States and other logistical reasons. I have two main questions — where to stay and anything special to see — with details inside. [more inside]

Covid/corona virus: info on potential Euro border/airport closings

Partner and I are booked to travel next Thursday from L.A. to Rome via Madrid, and home from Rome via London on March 22. Do aviation-afilliated Mefites know how likely it is that Madrid / Rome / London will close its airports or borders to commercial flyers during this period, OR point me to a website I can access that discusses this?

Planes, trains, and automobiles in and around Rome (and Florence/Naples)

I'm going to Italy (based in Rome) for a week and a half in July and am ridiculously excited. For the first couple of days, I'll drive out to the countryside from the Rome airport to visit friends, and then spend six days in Rome with planned side trips to Naples/Pompeii and Florence during two of the days that I'm there. I'd be grateful for your recommendations, but I am specifically wondering about some practical details. [more inside]

What to do in Rome on Republic Day?

We will be in Rome, near Piazza de Popolo, on the Republic Day holiday (June 2). Will most things be closed? Is there anything special we should take advantage of? One of us is quite pregnant, so watching a parade in the sun is probably off the table.

More on Rome—boutiques!

As per previous questions, my wife and I are going to Rome in a couple of weeks with our five year old. I’ve asked before about activities, but I’m curious what unique shops might be fun to visit. We’re planning to go to Al Sogno for a toy, but might be interested in housewares, textiles, silly hipster stuff, jewelry, gourmet items we can get through US customs, and alcohol. [more inside]

Your best Rome adventures for a five year old

We will be traveling to Rome soon with our 5 year old. Thanks to the great answers on my prior AskMe, kid is now sufficiently hyped. SO and I have been to Rome before, but this is kiddo’s first time (and first time to Europe). Do you have any sure hits/can’t miss things in Rome for a five year old? [more inside]

Hyping up Rome to a 5 year old

We will almost certainly vacation in Rome this May. It is one of my wife’s and my favorite places. It will be my 5-year-old daughter’s first trip to Europe, which is exciting for her, but she doesn’t know much about Rome, compared to Paris or London. Can you recommend some age-appropriate media to introduce her to the Eternal City? [more inside]

Best 2 night side trips from Rome?

I'm taking my mom, who is Italian-Canadian and in her sixties, to Italy for 9 days as a birthday present. She has never been to Italy (or Europe for that matter). I've travelled around Europe a fair bit, but have somehow missed Italy, despite the heritage connection. We're flying in and out of Rome and, while we know we could spend 9 days there and never run out of things to see, we would still like to take a side trip and see a bit more of the country. But where to? [more inside]

Ride from Rome to fiumicino EARLY on a wednesday morning.

Rome. Traditional sports. Am I not entertained?

My wife and I will be spending a week in Rome in early May, and would like to attend a smallish-scale, local spectator sport. We aren’t sports fans, but we do enjoy the experience of being amid a community of enthusiasts, cheering on something we only vaguely understand. Scale-wise, maybe on the order of a single-A baseball game? Examples of previous wins: a high school rodeo on Molokai, course camarguaise bullfighting and joute nautique in France. So. Rome, May 2018… is there a regional tamburello championship? An obscure suburban palio? Intense bocce? [more inside]
