Ireland: Self-Catering Driving Tour

We are looking to take advantage of the current extraordinary airfare rates to Ireland. We would like to plan a trip similar to our week in the Cotswolds a few years ago, but we don't know enough about Ireland to be secure in our choices. [more inside]

Ireland Vacation Strategies

We are planning a trip to Ireland in late August and had a high-level question for the world-travelers here. Our flights are both in and out of Dublin and have accommodations for both ends of the trip in Dublin. My question is regarding the rest of the trip and how important it is to book rooms for every night of our stay. [more inside]

Cork, Cobh, Ring of Kerry in 7 hours?

We are docking in Cobh in mid-June and have about 7-9 hours in the area. We would love to see the famous Irish greenery and landscape but aren't interested in the really touristy things like Blarney. Cork and Cobh both sound worth seeing, but will we get a flavor of the countryside in that area, or should we travel to the Ring of Kerry and try to see some highlights there? Thanks, hive mind!

One day/night at/near Shannon Airport

What to do/where to stay for 24 hours near Shannon Airport in September. We're two adults flying from the U.S. into Shannon early Sunday morning and need to be back at the airport on Monday to meet with a group of people. Basically, trying to figure out where we should go for the day, spend the night, and (hopefully) something interesting to do on Sunday while we get used to the time change. Transport info would be nice, too.

On evening in Dublin next Monday. What to do?

Thanks to the UK border agency inconveniently scheduling my visa start date, I have to leave the UK and re-enter after 15 Dec. Since flights were very cheap to Dublin, I decided to book a flight to Dublin, stay an evening, then fly back. I'll be by myself. I've never been to Dublin. What should I do? [more inside]

Hidden gems in Dublin?

You know when you get a recommendation on travel and you go in a place in a random city and there are locals there and they say something like "yeah, we love this place, but how did YOU know about it?" Well, do you have any current suggestions like that - food, drink, or other - for Dublin, Ireland, tonight through this weekend? Even the touristy places are great here but I'd love any insider info. Cheers and thank you in advance for any advice.

That's a lot of soda bread...

By mistake my company has booked me double baggage allowance for my flight to Dublin for a conference, so I have a capacity of 46kg. I live in London. What kind of heavy yet-hard-to-get in the UK thing should I buy to make the most of this? My only thought was a case of whisky or possibly a very large amount of Guinness. I only have one free morning (Thursday), which is also the day I fly out. Is there anything I'm not thinking of?

What to do on a day-long layover in Dublin?

We have one day in Dublin on Friday (flight gets in at 8:30 am, have to be back at the airport by 5pm). Can we reasonably find interesting things to do in that time? Parks to walk through, a good place for a pub lunch (and World Cup watching?) or just interesting things to see in the vicinity such that we could get back to the airport in time would be great.

Will my GPS cigarette lighter adapter work overseas?

I am going to Ireland. Yay! We forgot to request a GPS with our car rental so I'm bringing mine from home (USA) in case they don't have any when we get there. Unfortunately, my GPS no longer holds a charge and has to be plugged in to work. Will my US cigarette lighter adapter work in an Irish car?
