Going to live and work in India - first time living out of U.S.

I'm so excited to have the opportunity to live a personal dream - living and working in another part of the world. I'm going to Bangalore, India on business for several weeks and possibly months. I've never lived outside the U.S. before and I've never been to India. So I have a lot of questions. [more inside]

Jaipur beyond the "single day tourist" schedule?

We are traveling to India (again!) in March (again!) - our itinerary has a couple days at the end, and we are spending Holi with our friend/guide and his family. The day after Holi, the suggestion is Amber Fort/City Palace/Jantar Mantar. We did those things last time. What should we do this time? We will ask our friend for suggestions, but I wanted to ask YOU GUYS too - thanks!

3 hours between International Flights in Dehli Airport.

This would not normally concern me, however as I developed a illness which literally killed me on my last trip to India I have some 'issues'. I am travelling from Italy back to Australia after 6 months, and the only way I could travel on the same day as my husband is by travelling Air India. I am not looking forward to this. It turns out to be a quick option, with only a 3 hour layover in Dehli. I know this is likely to mean around an hour in the airport between disembarking and boarding. Is there anywhere for good coffee? (Most important). Is there some area that is better to hang around in the airport than another? Will Euros or Australian dollars be useless, or will I need to hit an ATM for an espresso hit? Any other hints? TIA

Family-friendly travel suggestions for India or points nearby

I'll be traveling with my wife and our 2.5 year old daughter from the USA to India in early November for a very good friend's wedding in Pune. We'd like to get there 3-4 days early and decompress/adjust to jet lag/settle in. I'd love suggestions for a place to stay! [more inside]

Attending AA meetings in Delhi and Mumbai for a visitor!

Attending AA meetings in Delhi and Mumbai for a visitor! Hi, I was asked this by someone going to India for a couple of weeks. I know there are meetings in both places but the question was "How easy/difficult is it if you are an American Woman visiting and want to go to a meeting?" This completely floored me as I had NO idea how women friendly meetings are in India, especially if you are a White woman. Please don't impute any racist undercurrents to my query. I am an Indian man myself, and I know first hand how tourists, especially white women, get harassed by all and sundry. I was curious if any Mefiers have any suggestions or experiences that I can pass along to my friend. Thanks.

Quick shipping of personal items to India from US?

Mrs. procrastination is traveling for work in India and has arranged to stay a few extra days to tour. In the rush to get her out the door, we forgot to pack our very nice camera, which she had hoped to use. I would like to ship it to her. She has a few days in a high-end hotel, so I am confident that there is a safe place to receive it. Does anyone have experience with this type of shipping? What can I do to keep it from being caught in customs? Will there be unforseen customs charges? Anything else I should be thinking about? I would have to send it out tomorrow morning.

Recommendations for beach shacks in South Goa?

I'm looking for recommendations for beach shacks in South Goa. Ideal would be right on the water, quiet, and with good food options nearby. We'd like to steer clear of places with a bit too much of a ayurveda/yoga/woo/backpacker vibe, but understand some of that is inevitable. I'm familiar with TripAdvisor and IndiaMike--I'm mostly just seeing if AskMe users have any personal recommendations of their own.

Need recommendations for reliable car service in Mumbai

The imperial family and I will be traveling to Mumbai in a couple of weeks. We'll be arriving at a profoundly unfriendly hour of the night with three children 12 & under. We need to get from the airport down to the Fort District without getting taken for a ride, as it were. What do you recommend: Taxi rank at the airport? Reliable car service? Recommendations sought.

Should I travel to India in early October or early November?

I am planning a 2-3 week trip to India this fall, and the dates I can go would be either early October or early November (2014). I've been told that October is still pretty hot, and that early November is a bad time to go because of the Pushkar Camel Fair - that many hotels would be sold out, rates will be high, etc. (Also, I'm a travel consultant and would be less likely to get travel industry rates when hotels are full.) It's my first trip to India, so I am thinking that I will be mostly in the North - Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Varanasi, etc... possibly with a few days in Mumbai. Which set of dates would you recommend? Any other factors I should consider?

What vaccines / meds do I really need to go to India?

I have an appointment with a clinic to get some vaccinations before a two-week trip to India. My initial chat with the nurse made me feel like she was maybe pushing the "better safe than sorry" angle a bit, so I'm looking for some other opinions and links to good resources for making these decisions on my own. Newbie travelling to India

I'm contemplating travelling to India (New Delhi to start with) in January for ~10 days and meeting a friend there who is a naturalized US citizen who was born and raised in India. I know I need a visa in advance of leaving (gathered that much from the US State Dept website) but which kind? And: what else should I know?
