Leaving tomorrow night for a week in Brussels. It kind of snuck up on me and I have questions! Please assume I know nothing about Europe, because I don't. I do travel to Asia a good bit, for what it's worth. [more inside]

I am looking for a hotel in for two nights in Brussels. I have a flight to West Africa on Tuesday, June 7 at 10:25 a.m. so I will need to get to the airport very early. I see that the hotels near the airport generally cost more than those downtown, and aren't necessarily easier to reach. For speed and safety reasons, I'd like to stay at a place that's a direct train or taxi ride away from the airport. [more inside]

I'm changing planes in Brussels, on a Monday later in Sept. One flight lands at 11:55, the other takes off at 15:35. My feeling is that I won't have enough time to do anything worthwhile, and I should just bring a book and wait it out. Is that correct? Bonus question: is there anywhere you'd recommend to sit & wait, in or near the airport?

My husband is traveling from USA to Brussels. He is scheduled to arrive early afternoon in Brussels on Monday Dec 8th and needs to get to Ghent. I guess there is a chance his flight from Paris to Brussels on Monday will be canceled. What are his best options for getting to Ghent if 1) he makes it to Brussels but there is so train/bus service and 2) if his flight is canceled from Paris?
