My husband and I are thinking of buying a particular lot on a river. If we built there, it would be outside of the 100-year flood zone, but not by a ton. Does global warming make that too risky? [more inside]

I've been growing artichokes here in Michigan off and on for close to two decades. I've never successfully wintered over any of the plants and am wondering if there are any Zone 5 Mefites with a thumb greener than mine that can help with my overwintering strategies. [more inside]

I started a postgraduate course 3 months ago and there was a girl who stood out a fair bit. There were various issues that stopped me from considering dating her so I went down the friend route. She seemed interested in me at first - we ended up being alone together twice on nights out with others from the class, walking around London and the river, but I, not interested in any kind of intimacy, kept these meetings platonic. It's only recently that I've gotten myself together mentally, gotten to know her better and decided I like what I see - am I too late? What should I do to move from a new friendship back to that stage of 'initial attraction'? [more inside]
There's this one girl friend that I have. We started out as friends and I thought she was cute and I had a slight interest in her. However since we were in different majors and I studied abroad, I haven't seen her in over a year with no contacts. Today, I just met her after not seeing her for a long time and we had lunch. However, I felt attracted to her and I was wondering whether I should give it a go and ask her out. I still think she sees me as a friend judging by the text conversation before we went out for lunch. What do you guys think I should do? Is it worth it?
Does anyone remember the title to the Radiolab episode they speak with a couple track athlete's about "the zone" during their running?

How can I feed it to make up for the missing sunlight? Other suggestions? I live in Zone 7A, thanks kindly, Jeanne3

I started having feelings for my good friend and mustered up the courage to tell him, but he says he doesn't feel the same way, yet still wants to remain close friends. I'm not happy with that. How do I get out of the friend zone? Or should I just get over it? [more inside]
I have a 1700 square ft. house. I have an air conditioner/heating system that is set up to operate with the whole house as one zone. I have one room that is out of proportion to the rest of the of the rooms in the house (much larger, much higher ceiling) that is always hotter in the summer and colder in the winter. So I'm thinking the solution is for that room to be separated into a second zone. How? [more inside]
How do I get my coworker to back off and remain in the friend zone that he so desperately tried to put me in? Now that I don't want him, he wants me! He never told me about his girlfriend, brought her up one day, lied and said he broke up with her, and now he's in my face. I don't see him in that way anymore though. How do I get him to see that? We got caught in an insane speed trap in a small Illinois town with a seemingly inactive construction zone. We had to post bond from the car, got a mandatory court date (400 miles away from our home of Chicago), looking at $1100+ in fees. Any ideas? [more inside]

I recently bought The Twilight Zone Season 2 box set on DVD. I'm wondering how to turn the set of DVDs into a nice TV show series in iTunes complete with episode titles and other information about each episode. I've tried using Handbrake, but all of the DVD chapters are of the same length and it looks really confusing. I have an iPad and would like it to look like other TV show seasons do that are purchased from the iTunes store. Anything super automated and created for this purpose?
What are some good guidelines to keep my confidence up and show her I'm worth hanging with and possibly dating if I can conjure up the chemistry?
I didn't think the whole "if you're persistent it'll work" thing would work, but it did and now I have a chance to get to know her better...what do I do? She's gorgeous and smart...now if I can just get her to laugh some more with me, I'll be on the right path. Or do I boast, or compliment? [more inside]

I came home yesterday to find that we've now got internet in our house - great. The only problem is, though I'm able to get a perfect signal in the sitting room, which is where the wireless router is situated, if I go the five metres or so from there to my bedroom, the connection rapidly deteriorates to the point that I can't even open Metafilter. I'm running a Macbook with a fully-udated version of Tiger, so what gives? [more inside]
Why do some episodes of the Twilight Zone look so different than others? Did they change the camera type in the middle of the show, or change the type of film used? This is, of course, evident by the TZ marathon going on the SciFi channel.
