In Search of Happy Thoughts

I noticed a few days ago that when I started reading before bed the nightmares I've been having for the past few months became less exhausting. Now I've run out of reading material and would love recommendations for some quick reads/videos/etc that I could indulge in before bed and when I wake up in the morning so my mind stops fixating on bad stuff. Share with me your happy thoughts, please! [more inside]

Help me find English-language Zen Centers in (Eastern) Europe.

I've spent time in and around Zen centers before, though I'm really a complete beginner when it comes to Buddhism. I would like to spend a week (or more?) staying in a Zen center with a program tailored for beginners. Where can I find a center in Eastern Europe that has a program in English that would suit me? I'm willing to travel to Western Europe but would prefer to find something closer to home.

Zen retreat in Japan

This summer I would like to do something interesting. I would like to go to a place in Japan or China or somewhere in the East to meditate and perhaps live a bit like how a monk lives. Zen fascinates me. And I think might be more inclined towards the Rinzai school but since I am a novice I prefer not to make sharp judgments about things I do not know. [more inside]

iPhone game like A Dark Room, but...not A Dark Room?

I’m looking for a game, playable on my iPhone, with probably crazy specific requirements. I fell in love with and completed (twice, once with huts and once without) A Dark Room. If I could erase my memory of playing that game and do it again, that’s basically what I’m after. [more inside]

What kinds of boundaries can I set with a self-centered person?

I need some help recalibrating how I interact with someone who is profoundly self-centered (ranging from insensitivity to my feelings to arguably deliberately "using" me). Assuming that I must keep this person in my life, what are some things I can do to feel more empowered and more at peace with the balance between us? [more inside]

I want to learn about the history of Zen.

Alan Watts, in some of his lectures, tells stories of the experiences of Zen teachers and their students- a sort of mystic, mythic history from ages past. Are there books of these sorts of legends? [more inside]

A crash course in zen

I've realised I need help in becoming patient or developing some kind of zen. I am currently coming up against a lot of irritants or external stimuli that are severely testing my ability to keep a lid on my stress levels. Last night, I couldn't sleep because I could feel my heart pounding so hard. I really need to dial it down a notch before I get sick with high blood pressure or something. [more inside]

How do I save my new-to-me Zen X-Fi 16GB?

New-to-Me Creative Zen X-Fi (16GB) holds a charge fine - until I plug it into the computer. Then the battery does a ten-second Death Spiral and the unit shuts off, making loading tracks an immense / impossible chore. Resetting sees a healthy green battery again. I'm at my wit's end. [more inside]

How to sit without sitting

In Buddhist traditions that emphasize sitting meditation (thinking about Zen here, but curious about others too) how are people who are physically unable to maintain proper sitting posture expected/advised to meditate? I was curious in particular about those who had been disabled in some way (paralysis etc) and in historical answers to the question.

Anti-depressants and the quest for Zen

How do chemicals (alcohol and anti-depressant medication) impact meditation? I am wondering if taking anti-depressants would impacts one's ability to meditate? I know dreams are impacted by taking anti-depressants, so does that mean that vivid dreaming (under the influence of seritonin re-uptake inhibitors) has no spiritual meaning whatsoever? (obviously those who believe in lucid dreaming should address this question). Please shed some light (even if just anecdotally) on the impact of taking these medications on one's ability to still the mind. [more inside]

Help me focus on doing whatever I'm doing well before moving on

popular songs with Zen/Buddhist themes?

I want to find popular songs with Zen/Buddhist themes, such as living in the moment, rejecting materialism, desire as suffering, non-attachment as freedom. The artists themselves need not be Buddhist and the entire song doesn't have to have a consistent theme. I know I'm using a loose interpretation of Buddhism. Any genre is fine; prefer pop/hip-hop. No chanting. Excerpted examples inside. [more inside]

Tao, thinking, and problem solving

What exists out there that discusses Tao not in the context of self-help or meditation but rather how its philosophies bear on practical aspects of art, scientific thinking, skills requiring concentration, etc? Case in point: it encourages an open mind and total awareness. I've read a good part of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance but it seems that's more about our relationship to technology. Related non-Tao items of interest are fine.
