I'm PRETTY sure I'm gay. Help me be okay with it.

I've always known I was a little different. I have trouble remembering things from my relatively normal childhood, so it took until high school to connect the few dots I had, but after I did that, I relished in the attraction I felt for certain other men. It was exciting and made me feel as though I was part of a community with a common story. I grew up with conservative parents who I haven't been able to tell but who I suspect have an inkling, given the things they found left open on my teenage computer and my shy, sensitive nature. I was fine with not making it a part of my identity and limited its sphere of influence to my taste in porn and online friendships. I never felt the need for a relationship- with women or men- but I enjoyed the way validation from "manly" men made me feel both emotionally and physically. [more inside]

Good credit card for a young-ish couple looking to rebuild credit?

My girlfriend and I are older, full-time college students with part-time jobs. She has a couple of blemishes on her credit history, whereas mine is pretty limited. I'm looking for a good card to help us establish more credit and help repair hers, that can also offer cool rewards -- either in the form of cash back or rewards points. Details inside. [more inside]

What was the name of this fantasy novel from my childhood?

I am searching for the name of a fantasy novel from childhood, which has been calling to me lately in a way that may greatly inform my artwork. It has been fruitless to google, as I can only remember certain clues about its plotline and cover illustration. Help me, metafilter! The internet is great but some quandaries need humans. How to discourage an ill-advised marriage without alienating the person?

My partner's 18 year old sister wants to marry her boyfriend of one year. They both live at home with their respective parents, are not planning to pursue post-secondary school, and are financially insecure (she does not work, he works part time). They have recently converted to a fundamentalist version of a new faith, and their plan is to rely on her disabled mother who would lose her benefits by caring for them - the mother is against this but of course loves her daughter. Their religious community is encouraging them (but not offering financial aid). What can we do to support her but not her decision? [more inside]

Googling "weird camel thing" surprisingly proved fruitless

I am trying to remember the name of a fantasy book I read around 1990 or so. It was written for pre-teens/young adults, took place on another planet, involved a longish journey on some sort of camel-esque creature and the development of a relationship between a trainee warrior-type and some sort of novitiate. Any ideas as to what this book could be? [more inside]

Really in need of employment and career help

Hello. I am really in need of help and have never been set on any stable career or employment course. What can I do with very few resources (I am down to my last $100 bucks or so; I do not own a cell phone) to get a job ASAP or at least learn more about careers? Are there any lifehacks, tricks, ideas or pathways that I am missing? I know there have to be some people here who have recently had to find new jobs and know the modern job hunt a lot better than the standard advice that's outdated. What did you do when you felt between a rock and a hard place? One thing I was interested in is teaching (either substitute or full-time) but I have no clue how to become certified or where to start. My parents are really losing their patience and I have no clue how long I can be here without contributing pay from a job. [more inside]

Help with SOYA Torrent Download

I'm about to leave for a two-day long car trip and I thought I could listen to some podcasts to pass the time. I'm a huge Bullseye with Jesse Thorn (formerly Sound of Young America) fan and I saw a link on the Maximum Fun website to download a torrent of all of the old episodes. So I downloaded the .torrent file and opened it on uTorrent but nothing happened. Any help on my predicament? What am I doing wrong and what can I do to properly download the files?

How to convey enthusiasm on the job hunt?

I just moved to a big city after graduating college in August. I'm not sure exactly what I want to do, and I'm not the most ambitious or confident person, to say the least. I have a somewhat untreated case of ADD, but I don't take my meds anymore; I'm finding coffee and exercise are much better. Anyways, I have gotten two different pieces of negative feedback on my phone behavior with people who had the potential to give me a job; they both basically said I sounded unenthusiastic. What is a good way to remedy this? [more inside]

I'm looking for a This American Life episode about a bunch of adolescent geeks/nerds hanging out in NYC. They go around pulling simple scams and social engineering pranks. The Childless Dating Those With Children

I'm currently seeing a man who has children, and this is my first experience with such a situation. It's new, so I've only just started asking the important questions, i.e., why did you divorce in the first place, how long have you been divorced, how is your relationship with your ex, are you both at peace with how it ended? etc. Everything seems to check out so far, but I know it would be foolish to think I won't encounter some unique problems if things get serious. Proustian Book

I remember a Young Adult Chapter book that I am trying to remember the name of. The premise of the book was that you could achieve perfection by wearing a pickle around your neck, because nothing would be as embarrassing as that so you could do anything. There was a pamphlet that suggested that a boy do this but the pamphlet stressed that you couldn't read ahead in the pamphlet. Anyone?

Desperately need name of late 70's Early 80's TV show!

Ok! What was the name of the show. It involved two guys, one in his late 20's, incredibly handsome, looked like the blond guy from Dukes of Hazzard only with brown hair, and he wore like a Gulliver's Travel get up, (he may have been from another time in the past) with a wine colored velvet laced up vest, billowing white shirt, and his sidekick was this super dorky teenager 14-18? and they would go on time travels together, and narrowly avoid tricky situations. It was usually shown on weekend afternoons, but it could have had a regular time slot in prime time. Racking my brain! Thanks for your help!
