"Let them eat bagels."

Where can I find the best bagel in NYC? At the risk of starting a riot, I'd like to hear MeFites' opinions on where the best bagel can be found in NYC.

I have lived in New York over a year, and I have yet to eat a bagel (I think Super Size Me made me not want to eat them for a while).

I have a friend coming into town in October, and as part of her visit, I'd like to take her to a great NYC place, with the best bagels on Earth. No small feat, but I imagine if anyone knows where such bagels can be found, the people of AskMe will know.

what the hull?

what should i do in hull, england? i'll be there in late october for a few days. i'll also be in york for a bit, and plan to spend a weekend in london. seeking advice for things to do. i won't be driving, so travel tips would be nice too, and i would like to not spend one zillion dollars, i mean, euros.

i like:
independent / avant garde / alternative theatre
science (esp. medicine & zoology & bugs & gross things & evolution)
running in big safe parks
seeing the behind-the-scenes of places people don't often go (i know hull has food-processing plants, anyone have connections that could get me a tour? i'm very well-behaved.)
television studios
cafes with tasty, interesting, inexpensive food
wandering around in hipster neighbourhoods
shopping for hipster clothes and hipster kitsch in hipster shops
hipsters
bright, relaxed internet cafes
free wifi

i'm not fanatical about, but can certainly appreciate:
art galleries (both small & large)
museums

i'd be 100% up for meeting new people, too.
any askmefi peeps in hull wanna meet a real live canadian?
(please don't be scared off if you're not a hipster, i was being semi-facetious.)

thanks!

Brooklyn sights for grown-up arty types

Weekend trip to Brooklyn in October to hang out. Anything you recommend? Restaurants, galleries, shops, hang-outs, etc. I think we're staying at a B&B in Park Slope. I'll be 5 months pregnant by then so we won't be bar-hopping but we do want a nice, mellow trip with a focus on the country's fourth-largest pseudo-city. We may go to Manhattan to meet some people for lunch one day but other than that it's all about laughing at hipster costumery, eating great food, and buying local handmade goods/art. (Think http://designsponge.blogspot.com/ in terms of aesthetic.) Please share your secrets.

Introduce my dad to NYC

My parents are visiting me the first week in August, but I just found out that I need to briefly interrupt their visit to attend a meeting in New York. My dad has never been to NYC and I'll have some down time, so I'm thinking about taking him with me. Help me plan a fun two day visit for him. There are a few restrictions: (1.) My dad is old and overweight, and he can't do a lot of walking or waiting in line. (2.) He is a devout Mormon and does not like to be in settings where everyone is drinking. (3.) I can't spend too much money.

Bonus points for people who can recommend cheap places for things like evening boat rides on the Hudson, cheap helicopter rides for viewing the skyline, and other stuff that will allow him to take in the city while sitting on his ass. ;-) Thanks in advance.

NY State geography for Kiwis - Hewlett to NYC commute

My US-resident sister will be moving to Hewlett, NY in August this year. I am planning a trip from New Zealand to see her, and I need some advice. I expect that we (partner + 10 year old) will not stay with her, but will need accomodation. Also, I would like to make the trip around the world have some tourist value. So is it feasible to stay in NYC and make day-trips to Hewlett? Conversely, is Hewlett likely to have some suitable accomodation that would be a base for NYC? Or should I not bother combining the two? Comments on rail/bus transport particularly appreciated; I really don't want to drive.
