Parents coming to visit in NY. Where should I take them?

Parents coming to visit in NY. Where should I take them? My parents are coming to visit me in New York for a week in late March. They are in their 60's, have been all over the world and like to try new things. I want to take them to see some great stuff around the city, but there's one problem - they don't speak a word of English. They have been many times to NY in the past so all the obvious touristy stuff has been done already.

An example of what I'm looking for: last time they were here I took them to the ballet (Kirov) and to a couple of lowbrow shows (Fuerzabruta and Blue Man Group). They loved it all.

So, what can I do with them that they'll like and will be able to enjoy even with the language barrier? I know you know the answer, hive mind.

P.S.: I'd like to avoid Broadway musicals if possible. They would probably like it, but I fucking hate musicals. Thanks!

NYC Limo/Van Referral Needed

I'd like a referral for a service in New York City that can provide transport for six people, and luggage, from Penn Station to the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. There are dozens - if not hundreds - limo services to choose from so I just need help separating the wheat from the chaff. Thanks.

I need my meds, but I also need my ups and downs!

I need a Psychiatrist in NY - one that has experience dealing with artists and won't drug me into a straight-line mood. I need my meds, but I also need my ups and downs! I have been going to a psychiatrist for the past 5 years. She is very experienced in dealing with artists and fully understands and respects the fact that some people just cannot be put into too stable a mood.

Sounds crazy? Well, it's not. Artists, writers, maybe even philosophers need to have their ups and downs in order to produce their art, thoughts, get in touch with their emotions. After a few trials we finally found the med combination that keeps me fully functional, stable, happy - but doesn't kill my much needed spells of light melancoly and introspection.

Only now I'm moving to NY. I could just find a psychiatrist that would keep me on the meds I'm on now, but I really prefer one that understands and respects what I have explained above.

Recommendations can be e-mailed to need.a.shrink@gmail.com and would be really, really appreciated. Thanks!

University of Graphic Design?

What schools (colleges/universities) are good for graphic design in NYC? I know almost nothing about the college world in graphic design

Two parts to this question... My cousin is looking for schools in graphic design in the NYC area. The only one she is aware of if the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT).

1. What other schools are good options for this field of study in the area?

2. Of these schools, which are kind to the student when it comes to financial aid packages?

Thanks so much in advance all!

Don't point that gun at him, he's an unpaid intern.

Looking for kick-ass internships in the NJ/NYC area. Background is CS, design, and a little bit of everything. The tougher the better. I dream about getting an internship at Google's office in NY or a FogCreek gig, but I know that both of these are tough, so I can't just apply to those two. My academic record isn't bad, a fairly high GPA at a pretty good school (W&M), and I'll be a junior applying next year.

Plus points for:

If it's in NYC, it would be nice if it was paying. After all, New York isn't cheap.

Something that isn't exclusively code monkey work.

Something in Morris County if it's in NJ.

Cool companies - something that's sort of cutting edge, interesting, or beneficial to mankind.

I know, internships usually aren't awesome, but there must be a few cool ones in the mix?

How do I find live music by up-and-coming bands in my area (NYC)?

How do I find live music by up-and-coming bands in my area (NYC)? I'm getting interested in some indie bands and want to see them play, but they have already gotten big and are playing only in bigger venues. How do I find bands before they get big in small venues for not much money? And specifically how can I find bands of a particular type and where they are playing locally?

More specifically I'm interested in bands like the Arctic Monkeys, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Maximo Park, Editors, Kaiser Chiefs etc. The are bands that don't really fit any particular category so it's hard to search by category, but if I can find a website that can help me find similar bands playing locally, that would be great! I am in the NYC area.

What do the various New Yorkers think of NJ?

What does New Jersey mean to a New Yorker - and does it mean different things according to what borough you live in? [More inside.] On a recent episode of The Sopranos, during a meeting of "Mafia" bosses, one guy justifies his reneging on a debt to Tony Soprano, when reminded he's a "made man" and a boss, by saying "Hey, he's from New Jersey...!"

For the benefit of foreigners (to whom New Jersey is a little bit Sinatra and a little bit Springsteen), just what is the status of New Jersey to New Yorkers? Is it considered provincial or suburban or somehow beyond the pale?

I sort of get the "bridge and tunnel" snobbery but I wonder if this snobbery - if it exists beyond the world of fictional organized crime - is even deeper and more distant with regards to what is nominally a different state. What are the stereotypes in play here?

For instance, would someone from Brooklyn look down on someone from New Jersey, you know, if they were prejudiced and unenlightened in general? Thank you for any answers - they will greatly enhance understanding of The Sopranos, Sinatra's Hoboken monologues and much besides! :)
