I'm no supertaster

I'm looking for very, very unsubtle: 1) malt vinegar; 2) sake; and 3) beer that tastes yeasty (like bread, and not like estery Belgian beer). I'm not sure there are mass-market products that meet my needs, so if you have similar cravings and an alternative, I'd be grateful, too. Looking for strong flavors and high-test products here.

1) I like malt vinegar on fries, fish and chips, etc. I want really bracingly acidic malt vinegar. It's never all that tart--even UK imports don't satisfy me. I want to eat a vinegar-soaked fry and have my mouth water from the tartness, like I'm sucking on a lemon.

If malt vinegars are, for whatever reason, not available with a pH of 1.3 (damn you, Washington fatcats!), what stronger acid would you recommend adding to straight malt vinegar to make it more tart without affecting the pleasant malty flavor?

2) I drink a fair amount of sake at home with meals--periodically the good stuff, but typically just Geikkeikan's basic bottle. With food, I do love sake's subtlety, but periodically I would just like a sake that has either a higher ABV or just a stronger flavor. Really, what I want is essentially gin made of sake. Does such a thing exist? I know of shochu (though haven't had it in a long time), but I'm particularly hoping for a stronger sake-like flavor. Do they make a distillate of sake the way brandy is made from grape matter?

3) I want a very yeasty beer, but not the estery Belgain witbier kind of stuff (which I hate). I want a beer that tastes strongly of Marmite or nutritive yeast. Higher alcohol, again, would be a plus, but I would prefer it not to be too sweet (say, like the very sugary Samichlaus).

Thanks!

Shortcuting the brewing process

I was going to make hard apple cider with champagne yeast for a party on Dec. 8th but wasn't able to start it in time. I know the brew process takes 14 days, but is there a way to speed it up? I have a bunch of packets of EC-1118 yeast (saccharomyces cerevisiae). I have a friend with all the equipment. I haven't bought the apple juice yet. Is it important to let the process go through all 14 days? Is there a way to speed it up? Is there some other thing I could make in a mere 10 days?

Is there a connection between the Pill and food allergies?

Could there be a connection between a food (yeast) allergy and birth control pills? YANAD. I plan on talking to my doctor about this, but I'd like advice/background that would help me know how to approach him.

I've had an allergy to yeast in food - especially beer/wine, and foods with yeast extract - that came on several years ago. I chalked it up to aging and natural changes to the body, and have altered my diet to accommodate it.

But, recently, a relative went on the pill and within a couple weeks developed a severe reaction to alcohol, especially beer. She went off the pill again after a couple months and the reaction disappeared.

After hearing about this, I recalled that I might have switched the type of pill I was on around the same time that this allergy developed. I know birth control can alter yeasts in the body, but could there be any connection between the pill and a yeast allergy in food? Anybody have any similar experiences or suggestions of research I can do about this before I approach my doctor?

Not so sexy, not the usual yeasty subject either, what gives?

Womanly-bits-filter. For several years have had discharge that I really don't think is a yeast infection (I've had classic yeast infections before) but I haven't had much luck getting a more sensible explanation. Hoping this sounds familiar to some other lady Mefites.

My vagina features thick white/off-white clingy stuff, the consistency of a smooth paste, quite opaque, creamy. When I masturbate it collects in the crook of my g-spotter dildo, and it gets discharged in the toilet if I push a little. It's not itchy. It's not lumpy. It doesn't really smell like yeast. It's not regular cervical mucus from arousal or otherwise, and it's not the same stuff as my thicker ovulation mucus.

I'm pushing 40, not on the pill, regular cycles, no kids. You are not my gynecologist. My otherwise-awesome gyn assumes that it's yeast but has never cultured it, and kinda handwaves my "no this seems different."

Anyone have any clues? Haven't had any luck at all in internet forums, which are full of noise and people seeking really basic info.

You make me sick...

I'm super attracted to him. My ladybusiness apparently isn't. (AROOGA AROOGA TMI NSFW alert) So I've been seeing someone new for about a month now, and from all indications things are great. I mean, yeah, this could still suddenly end next week, but I like him a lot, he seems to like me, we're Facebook friends (dumb arbitrary detail but this has never happened with guys who faded), and I'm more attracted to him than I've been to anyone, ever. Just his being in the room is enough.

The problem is, literally every time we have sex, I get vaginal issues -- weird discharge, weird itching, weird pain, sometimes all of the above. It's starting to interfere with our (otherwise excellent) sex life, because it kind of puts a damper on things when every time he tries something I'm in excruciating pain.

Because someone will ask, I got tested for STDs the first time this happened and came up clean. They tested for everything but HPV and herpes, and I feel like if I had either of those, especially the first time, it'd be obvious. (I was clean before this, too.) He says he's been tested recently, too, and is fine. There's a (fairly decent; we've been over it) chance he's sleeping with other people, but we always use condoms, and I don't think I'm pregnant but I guess that's a remote possibility.

Other details: When they tested me they said I probably have BV, and I've taken the antibiotics they gave me on and off (because work functions involved drinking, and you can't take them with alcohol). That didn't help. The symptoms honestly seem more like yeast, so the other day I took the 1-day OTC stuff, which helped for a few days until it didn't. Because we've had intercourse since then.

Possibly red herring: A few days ago this really, really, really, really weird and scary thing happened where the closest comparison I can think of is my water breaking. It was exactly like that. I have no explanation for this.

I haven't told him any of this except the part where I've been tested and am OK and the part where things hurt. It seems like the sort of thing that would freak someone out if phrased poorly, especially this early on.

Anyway, enough TMI: Is this even a thing? Can you be allergic to a person? Google gives me a bunch of New Age crap.

What do I do with expired yeast?

What can you do with expired yeast? I have two foil packets which expired a year ago, and a canister that expired five years ago.

I don't have enough other ingredients to just experiment (and I really want to make sure the king cake I'm making is perfect as hell), so I'm just gonna buy some more, but I don't want to just throw away this stuff.

Any ideas?

How to deal with a yeast infection when I can't see a doc right away?

I think I have a yeast infection but I'm having a hard time getting a doctor's appointment anytime soon. Advice for what to do in the meantime is appreciated! I've been having some discomfort which, upon much googling, seems very likely to be a YI (itchy, ouchy, peeling skin, discharge, etc) and the conditions seem right for it (I've been taking antibiotics recently, well currently, for a different illness.) I've never had a yeast infection before so it didn't occur to me right away, but now I'm fairly certain that's what's going on.

Anyway, due to frequently-changing insurance I don't have a regular primary care physician or gynecologist. So far I've been having pretty bad results calling the gynies listed through my insurance- the best I've been able to get so far is an appointment for a week from Thursday! I called Planned Parenthood too, thinking they'd be able to help me out but apparently they are booked through October. Shit!

So, I was going to just go get an OTC remedy from the drugstore and hope that helps until I have my doctor's appointment. But after perusing several threads on here regarding the topic, there seem to be mixed opinions on the OTCs and I'm not sure what to do.

So my questions are basically:
-What OTC medication has worked best for you/ would you recommend/ not recommend?
-Or, is this the type of thing I can get taken care of through a "Minute Clinic" type place (as in, they will prescribe me diflucan or whatever it is without an exam?) If so, where specifically might I be able to do this (In chicago?)
-Is the antibiotic going to make it worse? (I've been taking it for an upper-respiratory type infection but it doesn't seem to be working anyway, I'm guessing it's viral, so it seems kind of pointless to keep taking it if it's causing other problems for me.)
-Is waiting week+ to see a doc about this a big deal? It seems annoying for sure but I don't know what else I can do.
-I've seen some posts about putting yogurt in various places and while I appreciate the intent it kind of skeeves me out and I probably won't be doing that.
-Any other advice to get me through it appreciated.

(also, in case you were wondering, although I think it's YI, I have been fairly sexually active recently and have taken that into account- I'm due for STD screenings anyway so I will address that at my doctor's appointment. Just in case it's not what I think it is. But I'm pretty sure it is.)
Ow.

I hate sex. Now what? Question is unfocused and NSFW. Sorry.
I am a woman. Sex for me has been sometimes painful, almost always boring, never orgasmic. Foreplay is not much better. If one more guy fingerbangs me for ten minutes like that’s supposed to do something for me I will cry. It doesn’t help that fucking, with or without a condom, tends to give me a yeast infection. I have almost no sex drive, and I have no idea whether that’s my natural state or whether that’s a response to ten years of not enjoying sex. Giving instruction is extremely uncomfortable for me and leads to me feeling so nervous that I can’t come anyway. Having to give instruction in the first place is a serious turn-off to me. And a major problem I have is that I worry that the person I am with is not enjoying the sex we are having so inserting some unsexy 101 interlude just aggravates that in me (this also makes me uncomfortable with being on top). I’ve tried modeling the behavior I’m looking for (“tell me what you like” and shit like that) with no success. I am OK with sex if I am absolutely positive that the guy is enjoying it, and if he magically possesses the ability to make me come that’s a nice bonus, but that combo has been so fucking rare in my life that when I combine it in my head with my already narrow guy requirements (like, that I be interested in the guy, which barely ever happens) I end up feeling like I’m going to be alone forever. I’m sort of OK with that but it’s not what I really want for myself. I don’t know what to do about this.

* Is there a way to prevent yeast infections from happening every damn time I have sex (with or without condoms)? *

* Is there a way to get the guy to do things that feel good and to not do things that feel bad (my clit is not a game of Whack-A-Mole) without feeling like I want to run out of the room? *

I really appreciate your help with this. I will feel most helped by specific suggestions and least helped by suggestions to seek therapy.

Make the itching stoppp

Any last-ditch yeast infection treatments that worked for you? Also, has anyone experienced persistent recurring yeast infections on Synthroid or other replacement thyroid hormones? I've tried everything, it seems. I've completely upended my diet to stop eating sugars (I am the kind of person for whom dessert makes life worth living so this has been a huge and horrible change), quit drinking alcohol, multiple courses of Diflucan. I'm going panty-less whenever possible, taking probiotics twice a day, blowdrying my pelvis silly when I get out of the shower. My husband even went in and got his own Diflucan to take. Yet this yeast just keeps popping back up. I woke up with that familiar tingling sensation this morning and basically wanted to die.

My doctor's next plan is to take me off Nuva Ring, which I really don't want to do. I like Nuva Ring and I've been on it for 7 years without incident up to now. Right before these infections began, I started taking Synthroid, and I'm wondering if that might be exacerbating things.

I know you're not my doctor, and my doctor is very much involved here, but it seems like every doctor has a different approach to treating persistent yeast, and if anything weird worked for you that let you stay on the HBC you liked, I would be glad to try it. Thanks!

I am on a self imposed yeast free diet after I realised it really triggers the seborrheic dermatitis-like condition that I have on parts of my face. Am I going to have to eat like this forever? When I don't eat breads and drink alcohol the redness and itchiness is really reduced. Not totally gone, but barely traces left. I have had the condition for about eight years now since I was 13, and this recent discovery is the best treatment I have found after too much time messing around with ineffectual steroid creams that just treat the redness and not the underlying cause, amongst other products.

Yesterday I ate one sesame seed bun and today it is back in all the usual places, looking red and being pretty itchy. Fine, I learnt my lesson and won't eat the bread again, but is this really how it has to be for the rest of my life? I love pizza, I love bread, I love beers and wines. I feel sad that these delicious lovely things are going to have to be severly restricted if I want to have a not even great skin condition rather than terrible. Is this it? Is there some thing I can do to build tolerance in my body to eat these foods and my skin not go crazy? Or am I going to be yeast intolerant forever?

Which antibiotics will kill bacteria but allow yeast to grow?

Is there a broad spectrum antibiotic that will kill / slow down most bacteria, but will not affect yeast at all? I am looking for a way to select for yeast in soil samples. I have found that most of my cultures are taken over by bacteria instead of yeast, even if I make sure that yeast is present (such as by adding yeast to the sample). This antibiotic must not affect the yeast at all; for example, yeast can survive chloramphenicol but they grow much, much more slowly in the presence of it.

Does such a thing exist? Or any ideas on where I should search? The problem is finding out if a given antibiotic affects yeast or not. The literature (that I have found) is not helpful.

Will beer soap disrupt my girl parts? I bought some beer soap from a soapmaker. The beer used in it is Guinness. Is this safe for me to use on my parts? Could yeast transfer and cause an infection? (I am not especially prone)

I realize this question is a bit rediculous, but hopefully someone with soap science or beer science knowledge can assure me that I'll be fine.

You are not our doctor, but my husband's doctor insists that it's impossible that he's been giving me yeast infections from cunnilingus. Evidence suggests otherwise. Have you experienced this before, and were you able to stop the vicious and yeasty cycle? Every time my husband goes down on me, I get a raging yeast infection. There's a pretty obvious and direct correlation: inevitably, I'll get itchy, wonder what's up, and realize that he went down on me about a week before. Monistat (or, if I'm feeling motivated enough to go to the doctor, diflucan) always clears it up without a problem, and this isn't a huge part of our sexual repertoire--in part because of this problem--but, well, I'd like it to be, and I'm getting frustrated by the whole thing.

My husband has celiac disease and, in the past, has had symptoms of oral thrush, which he's never been really treated for. A few months ago, he went to the doctor to ask about this--after I'd gotten yet another yeast infection from oral. The doctor looked at his mouth, decided that the yellow stuff on the back of his tongue wasn't yeast related, told him to use a tongue scraper, and then told him that I'm probably just prone to yeast infections and that we should use a dental dam from now on.

I was a little flummoxed by this, and a bit surprised that the doctor didn't just give him a diflucan (especially as I've had plenty of doctors just hand them to me whenever I've gone on antibiotics as a prophylactic; I'm surprised they'd be so reluctant!). I've only ever had vaginal yeast infections under two conditions: when I was on antibiotics, or after oral. I never seem to get them from intercourse alone, or from manual sex, or just normally. In fact, I never even had one until I was twenty or so, after he went down on me for the first time. However, the doctor told my husband that it was probably just "the way that I am" (for what it's worth, I've never been with another partner, so I'm not sure if it would happen with someone else). I do sometimes get tinea versicolor (something I've had in the summer since childhood)--my husband told the doctor this, and he seemed to take this as confirmation that the problem is all on my end, so to speak.

We've tried using saran wrap as a dental dam, which I guess was, like, uh, kind of okay. But sort of not really. A week ago, we ended up getting caught up in the heat of things, sixty-nined (how do you even use a dental dam if the woman is on top?!), and here I am, again, with a raging yeast infection.

I've asked my husband to go to the doctor and ask for a diflucan directly. But thanks to his doctor, he's now extremely skeptical that it will make a difference, and thinks I'll just have to resign myself to a dental dam (ugh) every time.

Have any mefites ever experienced something like this, from either end? Is it possible that some women are just, like, set up to be yeast machines any time a guy goes down on them? If you've been in this situation, did fluconazole or another pharmaceutical help? Is there anything we can do (either individually or both) as a prophylactic measure so that this doesn't happen any more?

Oh, and before you say that he needs to cut out all bread products/sugar, he doesn't eat anything with yeast in it already, and he has a ton of food allergies. If we cut out any more food groups, he'd probably starve to death.

Please hope me, metafilter. I love oral sex, and this is making it suck.

Use up my yeast!

Besides baking absurd amounts of bread, how can I use up 6oz of Fresh Bakers Yeast before it expires on 4/12/2010? I've used up 4oz of fresh yeast over the past week baking for Easter and going crazy experimenting with bread. Now I've got 6oz of yeast to use up before it expires. It's currently living in my fridge, in a sealed ZipLock bag. (for reference, about 1oz produces 2 loaves of sandwich bread)

I still have 1.5 loaves of bread to eat, and really, I never eat this much bread ever- I've been having sandwiches three times a day at this point, and forcing toast upon anyone who visits me. I've got a huge amount of breadcrumbs and I've got a decent stockpile of croutons. Additionally, while I <s>like</s>love baking, I'm in crunch time at work, and don't foresee having the time/energy to bake bread every night when I come home. (although if there's an AWESOME recipe that I need to try, I would make the effort)

Please let me know of any recipes that can use this up!

or alternatively, how long past the expiration date can I store fresh yeast and have it remain usable? The internet appears to disagree upon how freezing affects it.

Anecdotes/hilarious stories most welcome.

Cleanliness is next to godliness. So, one who's good with sex related cleanliness is very nearly a sex god, right?

A couple questions (his n' hers) regarding sex-related cleanliness. 1. Spiffy balls for blowjobs: I think my boyfriend might have the same issue with yeast that this guy describes, but very mildly—in fact it's not so much that there's a smell, but rather that his balls taste a little yeasty in a way that's kind of unpleasant. Add to that their general hairiness, and I just don't find myself using my mouth on them as much as I'd like to. I'd like to give him some regular grooming guidelines for balls and taint that will make things more pleasant for me to go down on him. What should I tell him to do, and what's the best way to bring it up so that it's more "yay! more and better sexy sex for you!" and less "your balls have issues"?

2. Boobage breakouts: One of the more common elements of our sexual repertoire is tittyfucking.* Despite my best efforts at post-sex skincare (which, admittedly, is usually several hours after sex, since we most often have sex right before going to sleep), I'm getting breakouts on my sternum where he rubs against it. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening?

*Hate that word, but that's what it's called. For bonus points: is there a more aesthetically pleasing name for this act?

How should I be handling my yeast? I've never had a good touch with yeast baking. And I seem to be cursed when it comes to yeast. Last night I was trying to make pita, and I proofed three different brands of yeast (1st: Fleischmann's from a small bulk jar, 2nd: an individual packet of Red Star, then 3rd: some bulk product I ran out and got from the health food store) and none of them "foamed" when mixed with water and sugar and left to stand for five minutes. I used "wrist temperature" water - ie: felt like a neutral temp when I dipped my wrist in it.

I finally made the pita anyway, thinking that maybe it would work eventually, but of course they turned out flat and hard ):

Any idea what I may be doing wrong? Suggestions for where to go for more advice on yeast baking? (I suck at kneading too, so advice welcome on that as well.)

Best treatment options for yeats infection?

I have my first yeast infection after many years of thinking I was invulnerable. What's the best way of treating it given that my ladyparts are extra-sensitive due to lichen sclerosis? I can see that Monistat is available over the counter in 1 day, 3 day and 7 day formulations, and given that it can take up to 7 days for the infection to clear even with a 1 day application, I'm inclined to go for the 7 day treatment rather than bomb the area with a higher dose of meds over a shorter period. But is there any reason to believe that a more concentrated dosage might be a more effective way of treating this?

I have a doctor, but she's unavailable until late next week. It's taken me three days to finally realize what was ailing me, so I'd like to start treatment ASAP. I'm making an appointment with her nonetheless in case this is something else besides yeast.

Fresh baked bread noob. What's the best way to keep fresh bread dough for 24 hours before baking? So I found an awesome recipe for some fresh bread that I would like to make rolls with for the family Thanksgiving dinner. Problem is there will be some time traveling and spending time at family B for lunch, so I can't go straight from machine to rising on the counter to oven as I'm used to.

I'd like to be able to make the dough the night before, and be able to bake it fresh the next afternoon. What's the best way to go about this? If I let it do its rising cycles, can I then refrigerate the dough overnight and on the way to dinner without affecting its quality? Or would it be better to chill the dough immediately after its done mixing and let it do its rising for the few hours it'll take to drive and make the first family visit?

I do have a timer on the bread machine, so I could set everything up to start mixing early in the AM and be ready to take out and let rise about the time we would leave, but it would sit in the car (in MN - not exactly yeast-rising temps) for the roughly 4 hours it'll probably take to drive to family A, eat/visit, and drive to family B.

Any tips on how to keep the dough? Thanks all!

Any good tinea versicolor remedies?

I've had tinea versicolor for a couple years now, treated with prescription ointment. The ointment doesn't seem to be working anymore, and I don't know what else to do. Please help an itchy lady. Two years ago, a dermatologist diagnosed the itchy, red, scaly patch in the middle of my chest as tinea versicolor, and I started using a prescription ointment - Ciclopirox Cream 0.77% - to treat it. After several months of twice-daily application, it started clearing up slightly (was still scaly, but the redness and itchiness were mostly gone). I continued using the ointment once a day, and the patch of skin stayed about the same. A few months ago I went back to the dermatologist because I was running out of ointment, and what I had had expired (also, it was time for my mole check-up). I got a new prescription of the same ointment.

Recently, the condition has gotten much worse. The patch has grown vertically, is much redder, and much itchier. I have to make an effort not to stick my hand down my shirt and scratch my chest in public, and when I do scratch it, there's been a couple times that I broke the skin (not sure if this is because I scratched so hard, or because the skin is a different texture and therefore more fragile). I've been using the ointment twice a day, and also using Selsun Blue in the shower, but there doesn't seem to be any improvement.

I'm getting worried now, because the weather is getting warmer and my cleavage is only going to get sweatier (which seems to be the original cause of this condition). Before I go back to the dermatologist for the second time in three months, is there any other treatment I could try? If I do go back to the doctor, is there another medication or treatment I should ask about?

Also, side question: is it possible for me to spread this to other areas of my body (e.g. by drying off with a towel)?

Systemic yeast infection? I've got an appointment lined up to check. Symptoms after the jump. YANMD, but some advice would be appreciated. A few weeks ago, I attempted to treat a suspected vaginal yeast infection (with canesten 1 day treatment), and accidentally expelled the tablet before it had had a chance to dissolve completely. The slight burning sensation has been kept under control with intermittent use of clotrimazole cream, but I've noticed a few other symptoms cropping up that concern me:

1st: around the same time I treated the infection initially, I noticed a small area of dried, cracked and sore skin on my perineum. I only noticed because it started to bleed ever so slightly any time I had a bowel movement.

2nd: Straining bowel movements have become constant. I've added lots of fiber and water to no avail. My stools look like rabbit poop, except with bigger pellets. I'm still relatively regular (once a day or so) but it feels like I'm constipated.

3rd: I have 3 cracks in the corner of my lips that haven't come close to healing in over a week. There are also a couple strange patches of dry skin on my body that aren't responding to moisturiser. (on is on my shoulder for example, and about the size of a nickel)

Could any of this be related to yeast? Is it possible that I'm just reinfecting myself through vaginal/oral sex with my husband? He's uncircumcised and I've noticed that there's a off-putting scent under his foreskin that wasn't there before a month or two ago. Even if he's showered that day, it's kind of 'funky'. If he washes immediately before, it's not such a problem.

I've been checked as recently as 3 months ago for STIs and had a pap at the same time which came back normal. We are both faithful and committed.

I'm not on birth control or any other medication, although I did go through several rounds of antibiotics for a series of UTIs back in Dec/Jan.

Am I barking up the wrong tree here? What can I do to weather the storm until my appointment next week?
