How does your family celebrate New Years Eve? Between working a massive amount of overtime in both November and December (including before, during, and after both Christmas and Thanksgiving), driving several hours each way to visit both sets of parents for both holidays, not to mention all the other stresses that come along with the Christmas season, my husband & I are betting on being pretty burnt out by the time the New Years comes around. It's the only holiday we "have" to ourselves, and this year we wanted to do something fun instead of just laying on the couch, watching the ball drop, and then calling our parents at midnight.

We don't have any children, and money isn't really a factor. None of our friends live close enough that we would be able to attend any parties. So, what do you do to celebrate New Year's Eve? Save us from another bland New Year's celebration!

50th birthday coming up

The big five-O is coming up for me in August. Does this mean that I have to do something especially significant and particularly memorable? I don't want hubby to throw a party...although I do like to attend parties. Actually, I'd like to take a little trip somewhere alone--is that selfish? How did you celebrate your 50th birthday?

I'm going to be away from a computer for a couple years and am tangled in every corner of the internet. What should I do to insure it's all here when I get back? I have a website which will obviously have to have domain renewal, etc., but I'm paranoid about certain accounts being deactivated after a period of not being used. Here's a list:

Askmefi
Gmail
Myspace Music
Facebook
Twitter
Stumbleupon
Flickr
Blogger
Tumblr
Soundclick
Mediafire
Youtube

Are there any other steps I should take on the internet before I leave?

thanks in advance.

What dishes are considered classic cuisine? What are some different exercises and sports to try?

I need help selecting classic cuisine dishes to perfect and new exercises and activities to try as part of my New Year's Resolution! So it's New Year's resolution time again. In addition to the requisite resolutions (workout more, get my paperwork organized, clean the basement, call my grandma more), I've decided I'd like to tackle one basic "classic cuisine" dish a month and to counteract the caloric intake, try a new physical activity every month.

I've had a hard time searching for classic dishes for my list so far. I was inspired by a Top Chef episode where each chef had to make classic dish or put a new spin on it, but the only two dishes I can remember are lasagne and veal picatta.

As far as physical activity, I already do yoga, run and take a brutal cycling class twice a week. I live in Michigan, so take the climate into consideration in your suggestions.

Can't wait to see what you all come up with!

How do I watch the ball drop without a TV?

I am throwing a small New Year's Eve party, and would like to be able to show the ball dropping in Times Square -- and optionally more of the programing around that moment -- despite not having a television signal into my home. I've a large LCD monitor (42"), a laptop with an HDMI input into said TV, a Windows PC, and an XBox 360. What's the best way to go about setting something up for my guests and I to watch?

How does one hookup with someone from easily 8-10 years ago?

How does one hookup with someone from easily 8-10 years ago? I've always wondered this as I see people here and there that I used to have a crush on back in like junior high or early high school, yet I'm just getting around to asking this now. I saw this girl that I went to school with today. She was a friend of my best friend's sister. I didn't really know her technically (10 years ago). So I broke out the yearbook after I saw her in church, looked her up on myspace/facebook and would like to talk to her with the intentions of eventually hooking up.

How does one go about doing this? Does it work at least some of the time or never? lol. My message so far to her on myspace was "Hey there. I saw you at St. Theresa's Church today. I swear you look familiar, were you in the same class as XXX's sister back at St. Ambrose?"

I think that's good enough for an intro. Not too creepy or anything. Yet, where do I go from here because technically I don't even know her?I've got like a 3rd degree of separation at best. This message goes for any situations similar too, like people you haven't seen in 4-5 years, people you barely knew but want to get to know. People you had like one class with 3 years ago, etc, lol.
how to plan for a move

I own a home in the mountains of WNC. It is large and old (1895) and in fair condition. Fortunately, (and unfortunately), it is in an area that is experiencing a lot of influx by wealthy folks fleeing whatever. It is time to begin thinking about my next life.
I plan to move to a quieter location in the same vicinity and build a small home in a four years when my son goes to college. I have about (cringe) $8,000 in credit card debt, a $30,000 mortgage, and probably $100,000 in untapped equity in the house. Should I borrow more money to, 1) pay the credit card debt, 2) fix the house up, 3) buy some land before it all gets subdivided.

Celebrate NYE where in Hong Kong?

Where would you recommend my wife and I celebrate New Years Eve in Hong Kong? This is the Gregorian calender's New Years Eve, not Chinese New Years (but any excuse to party right?). Good food and relatively laid back atmosphere is a must. I like good music but I also enjoy conversation. Formal would be okay, but semi-formal or casual would be better. Preferably with a good view.

My lovely gentleman friend and I are going to be in San Juan for New Year's Eve. Help us figure out where to shack up for the evening!

Where's the party at on New Year's Eve in San Juan? I stayed in Condado the last time I was there, but I want to make sure that our room is wherever the party is since we don't want to be taxi-ing around in traffic. So if the party is in Old San Juan, we want to stay there. Conversely, if it's in Condado, over there. If there's no big party, then Old San Juan is best.

So, first question: Where's the party at?

Second question: Where are the budget hotels or hostels at?

My guess is that we'll want something in OSJ, so if anyone can recommend something centrally located and relatively affordable then that would be super appreciated.

Thanks, hive!
Why are there so many year-themed websites?

Themed years: From now until 2099? It seems like there are a lot of websites related to particular years, e.g. Liverpool '08, Towards 2010.org.

Here's a brief list of some year-themed websites:

www.highland2007.com
www.liverpool08.com
scotlandistheplace.org.uk (website for 'The Year of Homecoming' in 2009)
towards2010.org
essex2011.org.uk
london2012.com
destiny2013.org
glasgow2014.com
towards2015.co.uk
....
http://www.yoursay2017.org.uk/
http://www.2018england.co.uk/
http://desktop2019.co.uk/
www.2020casting.com
...
www.equality2025.co.uk
....

In November '06, I used google to search for websites for all the years between 2000 and 2030; I could only find websites up to about 2015. I tried again yesterday and I found websites for all the years up to 2030 and beyond.

Could someone please explain why there are so many of these year themed websites?

It almost looks as if the odd numbered years are supposed to be 'good' and the even numbered years are 'bad' (e.g. the Liverpool 08 logo looks like it's decayed; the highlands '07 website is more colorful).

Any thoughts on the above would be appreciated.

New Year's Fun

Looking for some mid-ized group activities/themes for new year's eve. You'll find So a group of close friends (15-18 total) are all heading out to a house together for New Year's festivities, and we're trying to think of some good activities. Can you suggest either:

+Good themes for the weekend (eg Casino, Pirates, etc [but less lame])

+Fun large-group activities or games
-- One idea we've hit upon is to do an "Iron-Chef"-styled cooking contest, but we're having trouble figuring out the logistics, so feel free to suggest a method.

Note that it'll be cold outside, so we want to keep things indoors and relatively low-key.

Thanks!

NYE Filter - Went to an open bar, and let's just say I drank my money's worth, and now I'm having pain on my lower left side behind the ribs.... Basically, I'm 24, male, 145lbs... i drank 13ish mixed drinks and now I think one of my organs is swollen (spleen / pancreas) and is pushing against my rib cage causing an annoying pain when I lay on my back, this pain can be replicated by poking at the area with a finger.

Am I doomed to live a life of annoying pains b/c of ending the last year in a drunken stupor?

How to make NYE party locations work for us?

Where and how do we throw the mother of all New Year's Eve bashes ... in Baton Rouge ... on New Year's Eve? My friends and I just threw an amazing Halloween party on Friday, October 28. It was an unqualified success. I ended up dj'ing, and had a crowd of no less than sixty people dancing on the front patio, with more spilling out into the driveway, yard, and street. When we shut down at 2:30, people were begging us to keep going. With literally hundreds of neighbors streaming in to enjoy the music, and the cheap-as-free booze, and the great company, and you've got the recipe for some delighted monkeys.

It was such a terrific time, we swore that we'd absolutely do it again for New Years Eve. But, our planning hit a snag. Halloween weather was around 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Typically NYE weather around here is about 35 degrees.

So, how/where can we have the party while not freezin' our guests to death? Should we look into VFW and Knights of Columbus halls? Should we buy outdoor heaters - chimineas perhaps? Any ideas or pointers are welcome.

What should I do for New Years? [+] I live in Milwaukee, WI but could probably drive anywhere, or if it was really worth it (and cheap) fly. What's the best way to celebrate the New Year?

How do we know how long ago AD 1 was?

How do we know how long ago AD 1 was? Lots more to this bizarre question inside. I'm sure most people don't question that AD 1 was approximately 2003 years ago, but I can't find any evidence to make me believe in this 100% (sorry, comes with my faith, never believe blindly!)

Nowadays we have newspapers, TV guides, and scientific organisations like the NIST who keep track of time for us. The first newspaper of modern times is said to have been started in the early 1600's (in Europe), and I am sure there were no long-running dailies through the Dark Ages. I'm also going to assume there were no people who ticked days off on a piece of wood, which they then handed down to their sons, and so on and so forth. So how do can we accurately know (to the number of days) how much time passed between AD 1 and now?

Two different calendar systems were in common use in the last two thousand years, the Julian and the Gregorian. Leap years for the early AD years are supposedly unknown, and were mostly illogical.

One solution I thought of was that items from Roman times (perhaps coins with dates on) have been carbon dated, which will tell us how many years ago the item was made, and at least prove that AD 1 wasn't really 3,000 years ago. But this still doesn't narrow anything down to the day.. and considering some countries actually leapt over several days in the transition to the Gregorian calendar, is there actually any definitive answer for this?

Healthy living software

New Years resolution time is approaching — can you recommend any good diet/nutrition/fitness tracking software (preferably web-based)? [more inside] I'm a sedentary male in my mid-thirties. Several years ago, I lost forty pounds over the course of six months. It felt great to be fit for the first time in my life. Unfortunately, I've since gained back all that weight. At the time I used a Mac-based program (that I no longer have) called Diet Balancer to track my daily calorie intake and my exercise routine. It worked great. I'm the kind of guy who needs data to show me how I'm doing. I'd like to find something similar for either the Mac or the PC. I'd actually prefer to find a web-based fitness solution so that I could access it from anywhere. What options are available? What has worked for you? What features should I look for? Are there any good free options?
