please pinpoint a pleasant poem

Please help me find a fitting poem for my yearbook writeup. Because we're all in the middle of a crazy semester, I decided to not bug anyone to write me something for the (undergrad) yearbook; I'm putting a poem in instead. My first choice was ee cummings' i thank You God for most this amazing day. While friends have conceded that it is "me", it's a tad too long for the fifteen-line limit of my writeup, and I'd hate to cut it short. Also, with its overtones of rebirth, etc -- I don't think that's very fitting for a yearbook writeup though I could justify that I'm graduating; new stages and all that.

Is anyone here at AskMeFi reminded of any poem in particular when they read i thank You God? Something hopeful, childlike, head-in-the-clouds, and just fifteen lines or less? Any help is much appreciated.

Is this a Chinese scam?

Chinese language filter: is this site legit? And, if this is a scam, what kind of scam is it? Asking for a friend: she is a graphic designer and received this email:

Subject: invitation for contribution
Dear Director,
We are the editorial department of Madison Series in China. We know your company from the details online and find that your works are very excellent. We are now collecting information for International Design Yearbook II. Can you submit some works for the book ?Thank you.
Enclose the contribution information.
Looking forward to your reply.
Best regards
Guangzhou MDX
Website: www.mdx.com.cn

First part of the question for Chinese speakers: is this site legit?

My friend then asked where they found her work, and they answered:
"We found you on http://www.sdgq.ca/
We will you send you a free copy if your contribution occupies 5 pages in our book."

sdgq is the Québec association of graphic designers, of which she is a member, but where she has no portfolio. So they couldn't have seen her work.

So if it looks like a scam and smells like a scam it should be a scam. But what kind of scam is it? Will they ask for money later?

How much should a run of 400 books cost?

I'd like to publish 150 - 400 copies of a book, in colour, for 150 - 400 pages. How much should this cost? The plan is to have a couple of colour photos on each page accompanied by text. The book will be about 150-400 pages, and a similar number is to be distributed. What sort of per-unit cost should I expect for this? Also, bonus points to anyone who can point me in the direction of printshops around Victoria, Australia.

Thanks a lot!

"A witty saying proves nothing." - Voltaire

My girlfriend needs a quote of needs 25 words or less to summarize her college experience! Hope me to hope her, Mr. A. Metafilter! For background, she's come to a larger city from a medium-sized college/state-office town to attend a all-women's liberal arts college and enjoy a classically Romantic undergraduate experience, while double-majoring in History and English. She rides horses (eventing), loves literature of all types, and generally appreciates The Good Life of wine, food, and song while still being a not-so-closeted sci-fi/fantasy nerd. Politically liberal and very conservation-minded, as well.

She's having a lot of trouble in her search for a quote to put in her yearbook - something ranging from witty (think Wilde) to "inspirational" without being too sappy. Not necessarily something that summarizes a college experience, but worth associating with same.

Software program that can import photos into a yearbook?

Is there a software program that can import photos and text into a nice yearbook-style template to create a book that can be printed out and binded? My CEO had asked for a photo directory of all of our employees (roughly 300) with their names and start dates. The first version was created using Microsoft Word and was very tedious to update as every time a new employee started, every table cell shifted over thereby affecting page and layout styles. Is there a program out there (preferably freeware) that can import pictures and accompanying text (like from a spreadsheet) into a nice yearbook-style template? This would be for a physical manual to be printed and binded on the side.

The Lazy Man's Guide to Shakespeare

How can I convert a modern English speech into Shakespearean English, quickly and easily? My college yearbook staff is dedicating this year's yearbook to our campus expert on all things Shakespearean. The presentation wiill be complete with trumpeters, squires pages, and a "king" bringing her on stage to present the book. We'd like to have his comments in a very florid, over-the-top faux Shakespearean style. Is there any resource that will allow me to enter our modern English comments and get Shakespearean English at the other end? Is that too much to expect? Any other ideas besides my lazy one that might work? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Interactive Calendar and Digital Yearbooks

Help us make an interactive calendar to put in our digital yearbook. Some of us are making a series of yearbooks in CD and DVD form for our study abroad group, with collections of our experiences and memories.

One CD is a data CD (anything not video, photo, or music) and one of the things I'd like to include in there is some form of an interactive calendar. I had envisioned something along the lines of this:

* Different "pages" for each month (we're spending approx. 5 months together)
* Each month will have their own date "squares" or segments
* These date segments will have one-liners about what happened that day (projects, birthdays, special events, etc)
* Clicking on those one-liners brings you more information, perhaps with some photos and other media

One idea was to use Flash to make this. Problem? We don't have anywhere to program Flash in, and none of us know Flash enough to make this.

It'll have to be something relatively low in filesize (who knows what else will end up on the CD), accessible to both Macs and PCs, easy to create, and doesn't need overly specialised software to run.

I could probably handcode it in HTML but that may seem a bit plain. Does anyone else have other suggestions?

Thanks!

How do I automate creating the mugshots section of a yearbook?

I'll be on a team next year, putting together a year book. We want to know how we could automate the creation of the mugshots section.
[Plenty More Inside] Here's the deal:

I'm sure you're all familiar with that high school yearbook section where each student has their own thumbnailed image printed alongside their name for posterity's sake. Last year the group working on the book actually dragged each image individually into the correct slot in a template. To make things worse, the file names were totally uninformative (by which I mean they were just the student's ID number which is typically used as their login for the school network).

Next year I'm going to be working on the yearbook team and I told our supervisor that I could probably find some way to automate the process to free us from having to spend hours sorting these manually. I believe we'll be using Adobe Indesign or Quark express as our publishing software. So my question is, how do we do this? Do indesign or quark have batch capabilities similar to that of photoshop that would make this a possibility? I was thinking we'd give Jostens (or whoever is processing our class photos) a system of nomenclature that would define the student's grade and name so we could get our batch operator to fill everything in for us. Something like this: "GRADENUM_FIRSTNAME_LASTNAME.jpg". Good idea? Thanks for the help.
