Can anyone provide me with information about the earliest forms of RPC over http?
I'm looking for predecessor systems or papers that describe the desire or implementation of moving RPC (or any other remote object access) to the Web, or even to the Internet generally. I don't necessarily need text-based implementations like XML-RPC, but that seems like one area of possible information.

Railsfilter: I need to write an addition to an already-existing Rails app to allow it to accept large files (and some trivial metadata) uploaded from a Processing (Java) client I've written. The Rails app already supports this behavior via a web interface. I can see a few of the trees, how do I fit them into the forest and get a pair of working apps? [more inside]

I need to know which book-related web service/API is best (most complete archive, most up-to-date, most metadata) for looking up information about books given an ISBN-10 or ISBN-13. [more inside]

Anyone know of a decent PHP class or function library out there for externally posting to various weblog packages (Wordpress, Blogger, Movable Type) via XML-RPC? [more inside]

I have WordPress installed on a site just to post (what they call) "pages," i.e. not blog entries but just editable content chunks. But neither of the external editors I've tried (MarsEdit & ecto, both on OSX 10.4) support "pages" through WordPress's XML-RPC interface, just normal "posts." Is there any external editor that can support remote editing of pages in WordPress?
