XCodes mysterious death

Why has XCode suddenly completely stopped working? Reinstallation has done nothing. It seemed to be working one day and then the next not at all, with no obvious changes to my system that I can think of. I am using XCode 3.0 on a unibody macbook, 10.5.6. XCode seemed to suddenly stop working about a month ago, giving me this error when I type open blahblah.java in the shell:

LSOpenFromURLSpec() failed with error -10810 for the file /Users/lukeo05/blah/blahblah.java

and when I try and open XCode graphically, either with a file or just the app by itself, I get a 'This program has quit unexpectedly' error as it starts to load up, then nothing. The details of this error have this line which may be useful out of everything it says:

Application Specific Information:
objc[8690]: '/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DebugSymbols.framework/Versions/A/DebugSymbols' was not compiled with -fobjc-gc or -fobjc-gc-only, but the application requires GC
objc[8690]: *** GC capability of application and some libraries did not match

I have tried reinstalling XCode, and the problem persists, so I was wondering if anyone has experienced this before and any ideas what might be the issue.

iPhone SDK: ApplicationVerificationFailed

How do you get rid of the "ApplicationVerificationFailed" error when trying to test an application on the iPhone? I am using Xcode 3.1.2 with the iPhone SDK 2.2.1 on Mac OS X 10.5.6. I am trying to develop my first application for the iPod and iPhone. For testing, I have an iPod Touch 2nd gen with software version 2.2.1. I have also paid $99 USD for an iPhone single developer package with Apple.

When I'm trying to install an application for testing on my iPod using Xcode, I always get the following error message:

Your mobile device has encountered an unexpected error (0xE800003A)
ApplicationVerificationFailed

I do have all the necessary certificates installed in my Keychain and provisioning profiles installed on my iPod. The provisioning profile is for development (not deployment), and is correctly associated with my developer's certificate, application ID, and device (iPod) profile. For here, I'll say my App ID is "9876543210.*".

Here is what I tried so far:

- I restarted my iPod and Xcode several times already.
- I restored my iPod.
- For the application's "Target" listed in the Project's window (not the Organiser), I brought up its "Info" window and under the "Properties" tab, I tried the following "Identifiers": blank, 9876543210.${PRODUCT_NAME:identifier}, 9876543210.*, *, ${PRODUCT_NAME:identifier}.

Can anyone help me with this? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Why won't XCode let me select text?

What the deuce? Why can't I type in certain areas using XCode? I'm just getting started learning to program in Objective-C using XCode under Leopard, and I'm encountering a bizarre behavior. The I-beam cursor just doesn't work in some areas of my code.

Here's a sample:

//
// main.m
// prog1
//

#import <stdio>

int main(int argc, const char *argv[])
{
int sum;

// compute result
sum = 25 + 37 - 19;

// display results
printf ("The answer is %i.\n", sum);

return 0;
} </stdio>

Clicking in most of the code works like you would expect; the I-beam starts blinking, and I can edit the text as I would like.

But if I click anywhere in the area indicated in italics, the I-beam just turns into an arrow cursor until I move the mouse, the blinking text cursor doesn't appear, and I can't edit the text. It is possible to position the cursor before or after the bold area and maneuver into it with the arrow keys.

What on earth is going on here?

Newbie wants to convert a simple website into an iPhone app, am I doomed?

Easy way to turn my medical calculations website into an iPhone app? I tried fooling around with Xcode... I have no formal programming experience, but I've picked up HTML, Javascript, CSS, and basic PHP/MySQL. I was reading about the iPhone SDK, and how it'll be "as easy to create an app as it is in Cocoa," so I gave Xcode a try this weekend, complete with beginner tutorials, but it was waaaay over my head. I have no experience at all in C or C++ or anything like that.

Basically what I'd like to do would be to copy all the HTML and javascript files from my website into a big folder and install it on an iPhone, using Safari to run the program. (Many hospitals don't have wireless access, and often have poor cell reception from all the thick walls and lead sitting around, hence wanting to allow people to run it locally.)

Is there a way to just call Safari and say, "open this index HTML file" in Cocoa/Xcode/the iPhone SDK? I'm afraid I don't have the time to pick up C or Object-C, even though I'd like to.

Actionscript development on OS X that doesn't suck?

I'm developing in Actionscript 3, and I hate (hate, hate, hate) Flex Builder 2. What are some other good options for as3 development on OS X? Right now I've got an ad-hoc system going where I use the "include" statement in a frame inside the flash project (CS3) and just write the code in Textmate. (I ♥ textmate.) But it's a little cumbersome; I'd prefer not to use Flash CS3 at all.

I've tried downloading some guy's actionscript 3 bundle for textmate, but I can't get the compiling to work. (Downloaded the SDK, all that.) I've heard you can develop as3 in XCode, but I don't know exactly how.

XCode book recommendations for an experienced programmer

I'm an experienced programmer that wants to start using XCode create some GUI applications. I am looking for a good book (or books) to get me started. Look for I've been a programmer for over 10 years, for the last 7 I have been using MySQL, Oracle and Perl, before that lots of java and C, some C++. Most of my experience is doing the backend for scientific web based applications. I did a bit of GUI work in Java back when swing was still beta and everything was done by hand but it has been a while and I hear that the tools are much better now.

I don't need a book for a programming neophyte, just someone who has been stuck in the backend for the last 7 years (and never used an IDE for that type of development). Can anyone recommend a book or books for someone with my background? Does anyone have an opinion on James Bucanek's "Beginning XCode"?

The other interface builder

A little while ago, before my last reformat, I had just found a really slick tool for generating interfaces/skeleton implementations for Objective-C classes. I can't recall the name, but it (I think) integrated with Xcode, and made programming easier.

My google-fu has failed me, here. Help me, Askme, you're my only hope! (Also, any tools at ALL that are of this type (devel utilities) and are as useful would be really nice to have.)

How do I change /Developer/ to /Applications/Developer/ in OS X

A stupid Apple Xcode question. I like to keep the directories on my computer organized. I guess I'm the only person in the world who does that.

Anyway, I moved the Developer folder into the Applications folder. My reasoning was Xcode Tools are applications, therefore, I could put them in the Applications folder. Boy, was I wrong.

Long story short, whatever project I try to build in Xcode, any project at all...will not build because of the error: "Task not found at path: /Developer/..."

Apple offers no support for this product, at least, over the phone. The only suggestion from the Apple rep was to reinstall the application. The installer gives the user no chance to specify a directory.

Anyway, is there a way to ask my Macintosh, kindly, if it would please not mind the fact that I would rather enjoy having the Developer folder in the Applications folder?

Maybe a polite sudo command? Is there a registry I could edit?

I don't know why this bothering me so much. I just thought the Mac's "especial," was one could drag and drop folders into other folders without breaking applications.
