I currently have a tangle of external drives hooked to my HTPC. Serving that stuff via UPnP is
okay, but I'd like to move my files to a separate device that would then be able to make them available to a motley assortment of devices. Thing is, I'm woefully ignorant about networking and file sharing, having never so much as set up a shared Windows folder. I need help coming up with a game plan.

If you could start your HTPC set up all over again, what would you choose? I'm gifting everything (from tv to htpc to router) to my partner and starting from scratch. Tips and suggestions are welcome!

Upgrading Ubuntu: I am planning to finally dist-upgrade my mythbuntu 10.10 box which has fallen out of official support. I probably will take 3 steps to get it up to 12.04 LTS, but this question is just about the first step. What happens during a dist-upgrade if I have a ppa-sourced package that is newer than the new distribution?

Background music and effects are way louder than voices in XBMC, so much so that I have to get up and turn the volume down every time theme song or music comes on during TV shows or movies for fear of disturbing neighbors (not to mention that they're uncomfortably loud).

My chip modded xbox classic is dying and i think the mod chip is part of the problem. If I buy a new-to-me used xbox classic can I soft mod it and use the HD that I installed in my current dying xbox? I would really like to be able to use my existing HD since it has all my media already on it (i do have a backup but it is a pain to transfer).

I came into some hardware I have no other use for, so it's time to try some "media center" software! Yay! Difficulties: Spouse-friendliness is important, I don't know the media center scene very well, the hardware I have isn't all that fancy, and my patience for scouring all the different projects' forums to sort them out is somewhat limited. Can you help me sort out my options and pick something that's close to my requirements?

XBMC on XBox Classic Users: It's been a long long time since I upgraded the XBMC on my XBOX. Is it worth it for me to upgrade to the latest t3ch version 2009-12-09? Any cool new features on the xbox build. I just can't bring myself to read through the change logs with every miniscule svn commit in it.

Looking to build/buy a (maybe) Linux-based media center. Requirements: HDMI, YPbPr, and (bonus) standard RCA output (not all at once), region-free DVD/Blu-ray playing (physical drive[s?]), some sort of remote control, automatic boot into media center interface, small size (not a tower), and (of course) lots and lots of codecs: Blu-ray rips, H.264 .avi, VIDEO_TS folders, the works. Need to know: cost, upkeep, storage options.

I have a 32" / 81cm enhanced definition widescreen CRT TV. I have an Xbox running XBMC connected via component to watch standard (ie not 720p) TV and DVD rips, letting the Xbox upscale to 720p. Will upgrading to an AppleTV and playing 720p rips dramatically improve the picture, or will I probably not notice any difference on such a small screen?
