[AquariumFilter] I have a Magnum H.O.T. filter on a 29g freshwater tank and I am considering changing to a Penguin Emperor 400. Is this a wise move? Do I have to run them in parallel? (and another weird question about inhabitants) [more inside]

Google isn't helping me find out what this bug is, mostly because I don't know what on earth to search for! Found in LA, it's a half inch flat greenish grey thing that seems to be a casing or pod, with a tiny red and black worm poking out the end and pulling it along... [more inside]

So how vulnerable is the Internet to some sneaky worm attack that targets Windows? It looks like organised crime is running increasingly sophisticated malware attacks to control large numbers of clients, if I were a bad person I could imagine a smart, quiet rootkit or similar that infected many, many machines then went live and could be very disruptive. My worms are getting cold! I started a vermicompost this summer, in a big plastic bin on my balcony. It's working very well, but the temperatures have dropped and the little wrigglers are getting cold and slow. Two options: move the bin to my unfinished basement with a dirt floor, or try to insulate the bin well enough to keep them warm in their current location. The basement is probably best, but I'm worried about mice! Any suggestions to keep all of the critters happy? [more inside]

I'm looking for a children's book, but I have forgotten most of the salient details, including the title and author. It involved the meanderings of a worm. Each page had a sentence that included a word that was being taught to the reader. The only specific vocabulary word from the book I remember is "erudite". The book pages were black or dark with highly stylized illustrations of the worm's adventure. [more inside]

On my XP system, the recently installed Norton anti-worm app told me that my Netgear RP614v2 NAT-enabled router attempted to udp connect to my port number 2061 from its port 12024. However, there is no port fowarding or triggering enabled, nor is there a DMZ address configured at all. [more inside]

My brother's PC has become infected with the W32/Sumom.C worm. I'm resigned to re-formatting and a re-install to remove it, but how did it get there to deliver the payload? He's sure it arrived via MSN Messenger, as his kids use it heavily. Wishing to use this as an educational experience as well a chastening one, (no more Messenger!), I'd like to know if there was anything he or they should have done differently. Did they have to explicitly run the Messengered file(s), or was it all entirely automatic?

Can I put earthworms into a rotating composter? I have one of those drum kinds that sit off the ground on a rack that spin around for aeration. The spinning takes the place of the earthworm action in the traditional pile, but I've heard that you can put worms in the spinning drums as well to speed up the decompostion process.

Bugger. I got bit by the Witty worm. It destroyed my boot sector and has ripped shreds through other data. I was able to use the recover CD from Alienware to get the system booted, but it seems to have installed a second version of windows. Because so much is toasted, I plan to fdisk and start over, but I'm trying to get as much data off the system as I can beforehand. But, I can't get my CD burner to work, even after reinstalling the Roxio software that came with the system, and updating all the drivers. [more inside] [more inside]
