writing workshops: how do they work?

I'm about to travel out of town to attend a two-day writing workshop hosted by one of my favorite authors/idols, but I have no idea what writing workshops are like or what anyone actually does at them. Writers of MeFi, can you help me figure out what to expect? [more inside]

How to find someone to share a workshop space with?

A friend and I have tracked down a workshop space to rent out. It's bit bigger than we need for the two of us (we're just hobbyists) and our tools (we don't have loads yet, but some). Ideally we'd like to setup a small scale makers' lab for woodworking. Share the rent, share ideas, share tools. [more inside]

Short corporate workshop ideas

Our team hosts a monthly forum get-together for team members at a similar stage of development. I'm hosting the next one (which is more informal), and I'm at a loss about what I should do. For a teen visiting London what are some cool, organized activities?

My niece, a 15-year-old who'll be on her first trip outside the US, is visiting us in London in mid June. My wife and I will have lots of time to spend with her doing tourist things as well as just hanging out, and her grandparents will also be here for part of the time, but she'll be on her own for portions of a few days. Although a bit shy, she's expressed interest in doing something cool and interesting with that time that would allow her to be around other teenagers. [more inside]

Is a 6mm router bit shank the same size as 1/4"?

I'm looking to buy an unusual router bit to put in a CNC router which takes 1/4" shank bits, but the bit I've found is listed as having a 6mm shank. Can I expect that the vendor (or manufacturer) is just pretending at being metric and ignoring the 0.35mm difference in their listing, or are there incompatible metric router bits out there in the world?

Activities for Poetry Workshop for 10-Year-Olds?

Tomorrow I'll be leading a poetry workshop for around 15 4th-graders, which will take the form of two hours of workshop, a lunch break and then an (optional) reading by the students in front of their group and a couple of other similar groups. I have some ideas, but I thought I'd hit up the hivemind as well: what should I teach these kids in the short time allotted, and what should I have them do? Priorities are fun and inspiring them to think of poetry as something enjoyable they can do whenever they like. Individual, small group and whole group activities all welcome. Thanks in advance for any ideas!

Video of workshop/studio rules

I’m trying to remember/find this great video made that summarizes the rules of a New York artist’s workshop. The rules that I can remember are a couple shots where the narrator says “The correct response when someone asks you to perform a task is ‘I understand’. If there are parts to the task that are unclear to you, the correct response is ‘I do not understand’.” [more inside]

Tips for a Poetry Workshop/Group

After not being able to find a poetry workshop/writers group in my area, I decided to start one via MeetUp. The first meeting is this week and will focus mainly on how to run the group, what our goals are, etc. Since I started the group, I should probably bring along some ideas? Who gets paid what in a seminar, workshop or speaking engagement?

I'm starting to get a few requests for speaking engagements and seminars, and I'm not quite sure what to expect on the business side of things. At the moment, these are private individuals who have a little experience with event planning, and know that I could draw a decent audience to a workshop. I'm a little unsure about how profits should be split between me and the organizer. I don't have a problem with the organizer making some money, but I'm the one providing the content, and I want to be fairly compensated. How does this generally work? [more inside]

Making myself my own job...

I've sent so many resumes out by this time that the word resume has lost all meaning, and cover letter makes me sigh. Aggressive job hunting since July has turned up bupkiss. I need money. I really do. Social services gives me enough to not starve and that's about it. Not being able to do much other than go to my job experience job and to the grocery store is sucking the life out of me. So I sat down and tried to come up with a way that I could make money and still look at myself in the mirror. I want to do a Mixed-Media Art Workshop aimed at the art-curious, beginners, just liked art class in high school, and people looking to kill an hour without it being a dating set up. [more inside]

"sliding scale options available"

I'm interested in checking out the local hackerspace -- partly out of interest in doing stuff there, partly because they do work that's similar to ours (they work with adults, we work with kids). Their pricing policy is very expensive and only seems to make a token effort to reach out to low-income people like myself. They've expressed interest in meeting and getting to know us -- I'm excited about this, but am also really personally affronted by their pricing scheme. How do I get over this so we can have a conversation? [more inside]
