I have a lot of trouble getting motivated to go to the gym and staying motivated once I'm there. I need a gym partner, but snowflake details are making it difficult. [more inside]
I love workout DVDs, but often HATE the music they have in them. I get especially annoyed when the instructor isn't even moving to the beat, so imagine my joy when I discovered Zumba a couple of weeks ago! I don't have a regular schedule, so can't really guarantee that I'll be able to attend classes, so I think I'll be exercising in my small living room. What other DVDs or styles of fun and intense dancey workout things should I try? Bonus points for something that burns off a lot in a short amount of time.

What can I do at the gym that would mimic Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred? I like the idea of an intense, well-rounded program (abs, strength and cardio) that I can do every day, but I don't see myself bringing in my ipad to the gym and taking over a classroom. I tried this at home like you're supposed to but there aren't any suitable spaces in my apartment. I had a phase where I went to the gym and did the elliptical for awhile but I liked how this program was more well-rounded yet compact. Also I don't want to shell out for a trainer. Please advise..
GymAppFilter: My trainer made me a sort of mix-and-match table of exercises so that I can work out on my own. Basically, I pick one exercise each from 2 or 3 columns, do them in a circuit 3 times. Then pick more exercises. There are about 5-6 exercises in each column. I have Cardio, Legs, Arms, Abs/Core, Chest, Shoulders. Cardio can go with anything. The Shoulder stuff also involves Legs and Chest also (lunges with presses, for example), so he recommended I not pair Legs with Shoulders and Chest. Everything else can go together. [more inside]
The fact I never liked the "traditional" forms of exercise never bothered me before. That is, until it recently dawned on me activities like going to the gym or running might be the only options I have left. But, with sensitive knees and shins from growing quickly and the residual effects of childhood asthma still occasionally inhibiting my ability to do cardio, these activities seem more foreign than ever. What can I do? [more inside]
Thanks to following the advice from some previous AskMeFi threads, I have finally gotten back into a regular workout routine. I am still working to find a set of exercises I can alternate between that make the best use of the time I have and that I do not dread doing. I've found that I really appreciate exercises that work multiple parts of the body simultaneously (I think it keeps me from focusing on how unpleasant the strain on any one body part is), especially ones that work my core without having to do situps. For example, squats combined with overhead press. Googling hasn't been that fruitful. What are some other exercises or combination of exercises that I can use to maximize my workout? I do not have a gym membership, but I have a good set of free weights and resistance bands at my disposal.
I'm looking for T-shirts or tank tops to wear while exercising. I'm 5'10" but wear regular length pants; my above-average height is all in my torso. I haven't found any tall-sized workout clothes. Please advise. [more inside]
I've done lap swimming very intermittently over the last 20 or so years. I think I'm an okay swimmer - I always did well enough when I was in practice - and I always liked the activity itself (made me feel a little more graceful than IRL). I can keep myself from drowning but I am way out of shape. I am motivated to start exercising and swimming is going to be the best option for my needs but I am really anxious about going. I have always had what I call 'sprint strength'... the ability to lift / perform extremely heavy tasks for a short duration. But that term seems (based on lack of relevant search results) to be my own interpretation and not common... what would you call it? Example: lift and carry 250 lbs a short distance a few times and done... no real stamina, just brute force (without injury)? I.e. Pick up 3 80lb bags of dry concrete with a growl and carry it to a nearby destination... Application: never done a lot of working out or weight training, but looking to play to my strengths in a future workout regimen. As always, thank you all for your input :)
I seem to do better with the structure of watching a DVD to do an interval workout than just trying to do it on my own. I'm looking for DVDs that focus on HIIT or Tabata intervals that I can follow along to. [more inside]
I'm pretty darn overweight and do not exercise...at all. Recently, I found a series of workout videos on youtube that I actually enjoy doing and I'd like some help finding some more so I can keep going and not get bored and quit. [more inside]
Today, I tried to get back into the swing of working out with the NYTimes seven minute workout. I made it until about Step 8 before I got light-headed and had to stop. I know I'm out of shape, but why did this workout zap me so badly, and what can I do to fix this? [more inside]

Hola folks! I am located in WNY area near the Canadian border (willing to drive into Ontario for shoppin'!) and am hoping someone can guide me in the right direction for the right kind of pants. I am looking for Semi-Fitted Lower-waisted (I am short waisted but have serious hips - I HATE those fold-down waist ones with a burning passion) Yoga pants to wear for Yoga & Workouts that also are *not* a matte/cotton type texture. I have light coloured animals in my home and also am self conscious about wearing light colours...hence for the sake of my sanity I like my yoga pants to be a "slick" texture and black or another dark colour. Annoyingly, crunches irritate a bulging disc in my back. Since I'm not keen on having surgery just so I can do this one thing (the disc doesn't otherwise bother me, as long as I keep my core strong), what alternatives to crunches can I try? If it matters: I do already do push-ups, planks and side planks.

Any downside to a combination cardio and strength workout? I have started doing combination cardio-strength workouts at my gym. A typical workout goes like this: 10-15 minutes on the treadmill, then I immediately do strength exercises, with no downtime between sets. For example, I’ll do a set of pull-ups, then straight to a set of chest fly on a machine, then a set of dips, then a set of ab crunches, then a set of shoulder presses on a machine, then back to the pull-ups, and the cycle repeats (though I often mix up the order depending on the availability of machines, and my mood). "Abel" by The National, which is essentially "Born to Run" filtered through indie rock, is the perfect workout song for me, combining the key elements of (1) simple chord progression and song structure, (2) layered instrumentation, (3) lots of energy/intensity (including vocal energy/intensity). Recommendation engines' recommendations have been lacking in (1) and (3), so I'm turning to you guys: can you suggest songs with those elements?

I've been working out for about two months with a personal trainer. She started off having me do full body workouts that I quite enjoyed - they were sort of boot camp style, in that it was a combination of strength and cardio (ie. lots of burpees and mountain climbers and planks, mixed in with compound strength bearing exercises.) Much to my surprise i have gotten much fitter than I've ever been before, pretty quickly. Now my trainer is transitioning me to workouts that alternate upper body and lower body each day, with more of a focus on strength vs cardio. Is this better? [more inside]
