What are your favorite post workout shakes?

What are your favorite post workout shakes? Looking for tasty recipes, my choco banana shake is getting played out. Any and all ingredients accepted. High calorie or low calorie (I do prefer more filling shakes). I typically throw in milk, choco whey, and banana into a blender immediately after my morning workout. What are a list of ingredients to keep on hand for adding some variety to my shakes?

I did see the old thread http://ask.metafilter.com/49476/Lets-have-your-recipes-for-lowcalorie-protein-shakes, but this did not get many replies. Hoping for some new ones.

DIY workout fuel

Do you have recipes for delicious and healthy bars for pre-workout fuel and/or workout recovery? I love Clif Builder Bars but I'm a little tired of shelling out the money and also eating so much sugar so it's time to DIY.

I am interested in making my own bars for both workout recovery (cardio and strength training) and pre-workout fuel.

I'm looking to make bars that are high in good complex carbs and/or protein and low in fat and sugar. I am interested in eating as naturally and unprocessed-ly as possible so whole grains, natural sweeteners, fruits, seeds, etc. are of interest.

Oh, and something that tastes swell is also a requirement!

If you share a recipe or suggestion, I'd love to know if it's something you typically eat before workouts or afterward

Thanks!

(Yup, I've seen this thread but would love more options.)

(If you think I'm missing something in the packaged bar dept., I'm not against hearing it, although I've trawled those threads already, I believe.)

No, it doesn't have to be Guinness Flavoured

Where is a cheap supplement store in Dublin? LeprechaunMuscleheadFilter: I'm looking for a place to buy my protein. I moved to Dublin (Ireland, not Ohio :) back in September, and I've been buying my protein from my gym (LA Fitness in Dartry). The thing is, the prices I'm paying are RDICULOUSLY high (42 euro for 2lbs, compared to the approximately 5lbs that you would get for that price back in Toronto). Does anybody know of any good supplement stores in the city? My google-fu yielded lots of online stores, but no bricks and mortar.

Help me grow!

Questions about working out and protein intake.. Ok, when I work out (weights), I try to take in extra protein (both via food and shakes/supplements) the day of and the day after the workout. I was wondering if that is sufficient, or if I should just be taking in extra protein constantly -- the day before, of, after, and several days after.. I work out 2-3 times a week, so this would mean all week.

Basically, I'm asking what the 'shelf-life' of protein in your body is, and for how many days after exercise do your muscles benefit from having extra protein in your system?

Also, what is the minimum number of grams of protein I would need daily to build muscle, assuming I weigh ~180 lbs. and wanted to add some muscle/weight?

Thank you for any responses!

Free energy!

My gym gives out energy bars for free! Should I eat them? I work out with a fair intensity -- about an hour of serious cardio a day, plus weights every other day -- and one of the guys at the desk in the gym told me that I should a) eat a high-carbohydrate energy bar before I work out, to increase my stamina, and b) eat a high-protein energy bar after I work out, to help build muscle. This sounds like an awful lot of eatin' to me -- but it seems like the entire fitness industry concurs with the desk guy.

Should I eat these things? Both of them? Won't I just get fat? Am I a victim of Big Energy Bar propaganda?

Supplement my Weight-Training

Followup question: Recommend some good protein (and other nutritional) supplements to compliment my weight-training. [more inside] It's been a month since I started weight-training and it's going fine so far. I'm on a Upper-then-Lower alternate-day schedule.

Now, I've concerns regarding my diet. As I mentioned in the earlier thread, my choice of food is restricted to a few places, like Subway, some pizza, some Indian and Chinese. A rough estimate is that I consume 1500 calories a day (excluding supplements). I would ideally like 1500 more. I could simply buys tons of protein supplements. One problem, I can't afford to spend too much. I can't spend more than $120/month on them (also, in which case, I'll have to economize on regular food, but I've some ideas there.)

So, with that in mind, what are good nutrition/calorie strategies (and products)?
