Can you recommend a way to make my wrist not whine at chest presses? Are there any women's fitness gloves that stabilize and support the wrists, without a lot of padding? Or a different solution?

I'm a 24 year old guy who's very skinny and has never really worked out. However, by virtue of sitting behind a desk every day for the last couple years, I've developed some stomach flab. Besides that, though, still skinny as can be.
I want to join a gym to accomplish a few things:
- lose the stomach flab
- get slightly bigger / more muscular elsewhere (tough since I'm so skinny…main area I'd like to improve are my arms)
- get some stamina
From what I know, the stamina part will come through cardio, but that'll burn a lot of calories and go against the whole 'getting bigger' idea. Would love for those with knowledge or experience to give me some ideas of what to do…machines to use, exercises to try, etc.
Thanks.

How do I find time and motivation to stick to a workout plan, given a moderately stressful schedule, quite a bit of work, and not a huge amount of relaxation time (which working out would cut into)?

After being out of commission over the winter, I'm trying to get back into shape. I am 5'8", mid forties female. Last fall I weighed 118 lbs, and ran 5k five days a week on the treadmill, followed by 10-20 minutes stairmaster. I was extremely sedentary for about 4 months over the winter due to a knee issue. I currently weigh 129 after being back to working out for a few weeks, and only want to lose about five more pounds. However, I want these five pounds to come from my lower body, not my upper.

I hate working out. It's incredibly boring. I've tried music, and it does help to a degree, but it's not enough. I don't have anyone to work out with. Last time, I put my towel over my head and drowned out outside sensory input as much as possible and was able to perform better. But that makes the boredom much worse.

I am stuck in New York because of work, can anyone recommend a rock gym in Brooklyn. I normally climb at
New Jersey Rock Gym so something similar would be awesome but I am willing to make some concessions as a one time thing. Thank you all.

Okay here's a question. The other day I stepped on the bathroom scales and the number displayed was a tad on the high side, by about 15-20lbs, so my first thought was 'Yeesh, I should join a gym'. However on further reflection, having never set foot in a gym since my traumatizing school days joining one seems like quite a scary prospect. So my question is.. What's the deal with gyms? What's the ettiquette, what do you need, will all these fit gym types be chuckling at my pathetic flabby assed efforts, are the showers still those bloody communal type affairs I shudder to remember back in school?
